Central/Northwest Event Forecast
August 23, 2005 Report
Northern California
This week's main focus for Norcal will be windswell. Some upper level activity will be affecting the Pacific NW as well as a shortwave trough sliding down the California coastline. This will increase NW winds along the coast allowing some larger windswell in the 3-4'+ range to filter in to most locations for mid week. This will fade toward the second half of the week as high pressure takes over again in the upper atmosphere.
Southern California
That increasing windswell in Northern California will also filter into Socal. Over the next few days expect mostly a mix of 1-3' WNW windswell and SSW swell. Hurricane Hilary is also cranking away to the south, but will be crossing into cooler waters before it really gets into our swell window. Expect some SSE swell for the second half of the week for exposed areas in the 2-3'+ range. Hopefully this changes.
East Coast
Things on the East Coast are looking kind of small until the weekend. A fairly strong front does look to move through the area late in the week with a strong high filling in behind it. This time of year, we will begin to see this occur more frequently as we start the transition to fall. This will be preceded by some minor SSW windswell but certain areas in along the Mid Atlantic should see some degree of NE windswell over the weekend while simultaneously increasing ESE trade swell into Florida and SE states. The immediate tropics are quiet with a fairly vigorous looking tropical wave moving the Africa coastline.
Hawaii
There is nothing spectacular headed toward Hawaii this week. There are two smaller bursts of S to SSW swell due that won't be huge, but should keep things rideable and on the fun side. East shores will be seeing the usual trade swell 2-3' trade swell that will also be filtering into some North facing shore areas. The North Pacific does not have any groundswell producing storms on tap for this week.
