With Wes Laine, Captain of WRV Virginia Beach, the 2005 and 2006 Northeast Surf Shop Challenge Champions

So, Wes, are you guys ready to head up to Jersey and get all frosty again at another Shop Challenge?

Yeah. It should be pretty cold—probably similar to last year, like the low to mid 40s—but it shouldn’t be bitter. It’s not like it’ll be Jersey in the middle of February. But yeah, we’re set to go. The team’s looking good and we’re just waiting to see what the waves are going to do. The local crew definitely has the home turf advantage, but I think we’ve got as good a shot as anybody to take this thing again.

Home field advantage hasn’t stopped you guys in the past. Why is that? Last year you beat the Jersey guys and the New Yorkers to get your ticket to California.

Well, we’ll see what happens this year. I know Heritage has a solid team, and Brave New World will be strong too. And I’m expecting the Unsound guys from Long Island to be impressive. But to be honest, a lot of this thing comes down to luck and the waves you get.

How do you mean?

The way the format works is, if you get the waves you need, and you do your job, you’re going to win. If you don’t, you lose. Unfortunately, we learned that the hard way two years in a row out in California. But I tell my guys, “Don’t worry about anyone else. Just get your waves and get the score.” If we do that, we’ll do just fine. The other teams can bring in as many ringers as they want. I don’t care who they’ve got, if we do our job it doesn’t mean squat.

All right Wes, good luck and try to stay warm. If you guys can pull it off again, California awaits.

Thanks. We’re looking forward to it.
