How the Winning Films are Chosen: It’s been said that winning the SURFER Poll and Video Awards is as much of an accomplishment as winning a world title, and for video makers, it’s the only chance all year to be rewarded for their tireless effort both under the hot sun and in the darkest depths of the editing bay. The winner for each Video Poll category is chosen through a variety of steps. It starts with the video makers themselves, submitting and nominating what they feel are the key moments in their latest body of work. From their each nominee is closely scrutinized by the entire SURFER Magazine staff. Debates often rage through the hallowed halls for weeks on end, until finally, after all of the pros and cons have been weighed, the winners are selected. Everything from film quality, to editing, to storyline, to action, to character development is close examined. Some come more obvious than others, but every year it is with much care and deliberation that the SURFER Video Award winners are selected. III. Online and Ballot Car Voting and Tallying: • There are two ways to vote your favorite surfers into the 2007 SURFER Poll. First, there’s the time-honored tradition of buying the magazine, ripping out a ballot, filling it out and mailing it into the SURFER office. • You can also get all 21st century on us and cast your vote online by filling out an online ballot. Either way is good with us, just make sure you stand up and are heard. IV. Show Production It’s not easy to keep raising the bar for the SURFER Poll and Video Awards, but somehow every year we manage to pull it off with flying colors. General planning starts almost a year before the show itself, and by mid-winter usually a theme and direction for the show have been discussed and decided upon. Come summer things really start falling into place as guest presenters, entertainers, and hosts are all decided upon. Keeping the show running smoothly and on time is critical, and by the end of the summer a script has been written, the invitations have been sent out and everybody on the SURFER staff braces themselves for the big night. Of course there’s always going to be a hiccup or two, but come show time it’s time to enjoy the evening, have a drink with friends, rub elbows with the world’s most influential surfers and have a good time. V. Guest Presenters and Celebrities By now it’s no secret that surfing’s gone fairly mainstream, which has made for some very amusing, and at times enlightening guests at the SURFER Poll. Everybody from UFC champ “Rampage” Jackson to gold medal snowboarder Shawn White to legendary skater Tony Hawk were in attendance last year. Of course there’s always all the surfers, but when you pass by the boys from the Foo Fighters on your way to the bathroom, or bump into Lisa Bonet at the bar it brings an entirely different story. Who will show this year? Guess you’ll just have to wait and find out. |
