APRIL FOOLS' NEWS: 100-FOOT WAVE SURFED
Rusty Long and Grant “Twiggy” Baker First To Conquer Monster Chilean Wave
Details are still a bit blurry, but according to eye-witness accounts, big-wave hellions Rusty Long and Grant “Twiggy” Baker have broken the 100-foot barrier, catching and surfing a sky-scraper-size wave off the coast of Chile’s Isla Alejandra Selkirk, several hundred miles off the coast of mainland Chile.
SURFER received the breaking news via satellite phone from staff photographer, Todd Glaser, who accompanied the big-wave duo deep into the Pacific in hopes of scoring waves on what Glaser called “Chile’s Cortes Bank.” The photographer was shell-shocked but managed to upload the accompanying photo of Baker and Long dropping in on the monster cold-water right-hander before stormy conditions terminated his sat-phone connection.
With Billabong’s XXL Global Big Wave Awards just two weeks away, footage of the record-breaking ride could easily sweep the “Ride of the Year” and “Biggest Wave” categories.

Nicely photoshopped. If I knew I could win the XXL this way I'd have altered an image of myself surfing Huntington Pier to make it look like the biggest Fort Point ever attempted. Imagine the current! Well done boys. PS, the original Mav's shot is impressive enough -- no taking that away from Twiggy and Rusty.

It might be a april fools joke... the swell report doesn't match the picture they show. Chile has a building swell but its only 24-30 feet... even if the deep water wave hit a perfect shelf it wouldn't get much over 70-80 feet high.... but who knows i'm not a scientist.... maybe it could hit 100 from a 30 foot swell.

HOLY COW!! This is insane. I have waited my entire surfing career (2.5 years) to see the elusive 100 ft. wave ridden successfully. My hats off to both of these young fellows for their commitment, dedication and over-sized testicles. I hope to one day see a swell of this magnitude connect with Snicklefritz Reef. It would most likely kill everyone in its path (except for my mom and 2nd Reef Rickoon) but it would clear the lineup and I would be able to surf in peace once again...

This break on the southwest corner of Clipperton Island, called the Maelstrom, is a howling, harrowing funnel that is so huge it makes Teahupoo look like Ala Moana Bowl.
