This week Channel Islands released photos of the latest Kelly Slater prototype board, named the “Chunnel.” It is Slater’s most recent exploration into the realm of futuristic and unusual equipment.

Inspired by powerful U-Class (Unlimited Class) hydroplane racing boats, the board features a (decidedly boat-like) channel through the back third. A deep vee transitions from the channel to bold concaves, which extend to the rail line. While the focal point of the board is the deep channel running through the tail end, the Chunnel also features parabolic stringers and a carbon fiber laminate, which appears to serve as a stringer for the nose and midsection.

The channel, which is a small-scale adaptation of a U-Class hull, is designed create lift by allowing air or water to be compressed through it. This affect can be seen in hydroplane racing boats, as their hulls create lift allowing them to glide smoothly over bumps at high speeds.

Will this design translate to surfboards? It’s hard to say, but if someone can make it work, it’s Kelly Slater. Slater’s experimentation has continually forced us to reconsider design and convention. From the Deep Six to the Manta, Slater has continued to push the boundaries, albeit with mixed success. Although Slater has received criticism for his experimentation, the question remains: will it work? Or rather, will it work for anyone besides Kelly?

I think this design of Kelly's will work unreal, if you have ever seen boat-racing than you can understand what he's trying to achive, you have to remember kelly is a really smart guy and already knows this design will work , although I wish we had more discipt dimensions , It's really amazing to see where surf designs going , all kinds of fresh and new concepts that will make this sport for-ever evolving , The surfboard has truly come along way from balsa !!!!

Yeah Kelly!! At least someone is trying to move forward these days. Thats what God gave us a brain for you know. Never know until you try it I say. Dr. Slater is truly a surfing scientist. Play it forward guy, I got your six..

i dont know it might work... at this point if money is no problem and time is what you have shure go ahead and do something crazy with your board... if your me and you get a new one about every other year and you surf once every two months im going to stick with my 60 squash

Why would anyone be critical of Slater(or anyone) for experimenting on new equipment? I remember when the short board "revolution" started the status quo poopooed that saying it would never last. Kudos to him for being innovative!

Interesting. The only problem is that those boats are driven by extremely powerful motors. The intent is to generate mass amounts of speed over flat water. A surfboard is designed to harness the power of a waves while creating a responsive control for the surfer. There are 2 universal principles that are at play in the design of a surfboard, lift and drag. Lift(via less rocker/more concave, etc) creates the possibility for increased acceleration while drag (rocker, fins, V, outline curve) creates control. When working with non motored vehicles simplicity is key. This board will work because its still reminiscent of a board but it won't work better because of the misapplication of non relative design concepts. Kinda like the failed pickle fork and the rail catching wizard sleeve. Go back to the Tangent and the Bragely's Devil(CI Whip) They made you money and creditability!!!

Back in the 60's and 70's Vinny Bryant was experimenting with channel bottoms and then air intakes to push air along the bottom of the board to "release" the surface from the water. It's good to see Kelly pushing the limits and looking at other water craft. Vinny was a pioneer.

Is this a tow board or a paddle board?

I can understand what kelly is trying to do AI states "The only problem is that those boats are driven by extremely powerful motors. The intent is to generate mass amounts of speed over flat water. A surfboard is designed to harness the power of a waves while creating a responsive control for the surfer." But i think this board would only be used in a situation where speed is not the issue ie pipe, j-bay, Tahiti where the wave generates all the speed and control is the issue but we must remember even tho kelly is inventive he is still kelly and if he can ride this board it does not meen anyone else could

Looks fun to me on a glassy day! Did Rasta get him to move his fin set or has he always had them that far up from the tail?

Slater could surf a door. I'm pretty sure he has.

There are a lot of variables there (parabolic rails, fin placement, channel, etc). I wonder if he's experimented with each of the design elements before putting them all together in one board.

Hello, I'm from up north:) and I think I found a new place to hang So, what's everyone's thoughts about the Olympic Games?

All this stuff works .It's the conservative tite ass pussies on this blog that hold this sport back.

Looks like Kelley Took Jeff Alexander's bottom and ran a slot through it.I'm gonna make one and say I invented it just like Kelley. This board will never sell.Surfers are so scared of anything remotely new and innovative .Too bad surfers are not radical anymore. Now they all go to church and buy squash tail thrusters.Surfers the most ill - informed athletes when it comes to their own sport.Gee Kelley was inspired by a race boat. Was not Jeff Alexander Inspired by a race boat???.COME ON KELLEY!!!!!! Give Jeff Alexander the credit he deserves and he will show you how to make a dual hull board actually work !!!!! This is all killing me.All this stuff has been done before!!!!

This is the Gemini bottom. This bottom is patented.Kelley did not invent this.Just like his double nose attempt once again ripping off Jeff AlexanderJeff AlexanderJeff AlexanderJeff AlexanderJeff AlexanderJeff Alexander.Anything you want to steal from Jeff give me a call. I Can give you loads of Information since you can't think for your self !!!! Man up to your plagiarism.Did your girlfriend write your papers in school as well?
