NEWPORT STEROID SCANDAL: Best and Brightest Caught in Totally Crustaceous Trouble

Newport was pumping...almost as much as the roid-heads on the beach.

Major League Baseball has Barry Bonds. Track has Marion Jones. Swimming has the entire East German women’s swim team. And now surfing can add Dustin Cuizon to that HGH-infused list. Nobody in a million years would have figured pro surfing would suffer from the same growth hormone scourge as more mainstream sports, but if you made it down to the beach this past weekend for Volcom’s Totally Crustaceous Surfing Championships experienced a scene only Balco would be proud of.

Don’t let the gray skies and onshore flow fool you, Muscle Beach (aka Newport, aka The Hottest 100 Yards, aka Echo Beach) was fully flared and completely pumped up this weekend. With a collection of the most dynamic, and ripped, up-and-comers on hand for a burly little shoulder-high south swell, it was flex or be flexed. Throughout the three-day affair the varying weight-classes—the Roid Ragers, Keg Tossers, Jock Straps, Iron Curlers and Squat Thrusters—juiced up and took to the surf. Erica Hosseini looked good in her bikini, Albee Layer showed off his new layer or muscle, but more than anyone it was Hawaiian superman Dustin Cuizon who power-lifted the most.

“It was a full on scene down there,” reported Surfer photographer Jason Kenworthy. “Everybody there was like a full-on body builder—it was crazy, like Venice back in the ‘80s.”

But Cuizon’s big win in the Roid Ragers division leaves one question: Is he juicing? Is he the next Neco Padaratz? After all, how could a kid from Hawaii win in such cold water? Paddling with a full suit requires and exorbitant amount of strength, especially for a kid from the Islands. But how else could he dominate so completely? I guess we’ll just have to wait for the congressional hearings to find out what Dustin’s really been up to.

I hope that the reason this story was so terrible (subject line especially), was because it was posted on monday. Also Volcom Blows..."youth against establishment" kind of hard to go against the establishment when you are the establishment...Hey Volcom, maybe you should sponsor some more Hawaiian Douche Bags, because I think there are still about 3 kids on the island not riding for you.

"Erica Hosseini looked good in her bikini..." It's unfortunate that the above quote was all that was said about the women that surfed this event. Surfer mag's online editorial took a nose dive with this piece. I'm surprised this entire story got past an editor.

It looks a great event all in all. I'd say any doubters of the contestant ability are still kicking rocks somewhere not nearly as cool as Echo beach.

This event was rad as are all the VQS local events. Come on, where do you get to surf for killer prizes for FREE??? The kids are pumped, the surfing talent was way up there, and everyone involved had a smile going. At least one company is giving something back to kids without demanding payment other then have fun!!!

Sam - Listen cuz - I guarantee that I meant no offense w/ my (albeit a bit antisocial) previous post. Drew Kampion's quote was coming from a WAY diff. time & a WAY diff. place. But c'mon man: "Blah, blah, blah: young chick from Newport looked so great almost naked while surfing well" and THAT was what made a profile {or being mentioned} of her worthwhile. Really? I don't give a f_%!* what the 'Mags Online Editorial' or their Accounting Dept thought. Erica does surf pretty well; I've seen her out @ The Studio; whatever. All I know is how incredibly fun 'Studio54' was for the past month. And then just like ElMo got ruined, Rich Woolcott started showing up with his cokehead, asshole wannabe MLB friends; and hey, lo and behold it wasn't fun anymore. But hey, as I was saying, truth hurts: "Professional surfing is NOTHING but egomaniacal crap."

RYAN SO I GUESS YOU JUST HATE CHILDREN THEN I HAVE AN IDEA LETS TAKE AWAY ALL THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF THE KIDS WHO CANT AFFORD TO DO THE OTHER MAJOR CONTESTS AND JUST FOR THE RECORD THATS THE REAL MEANING OF YOUTH AGAINST ESTABLISHMENT. WHO IN THERE RIGHT MIND COMES ONTO A STORY LIKE THIS AND BASHES IT. ITS FREE TO SIGN UP AND THEY GAVE AWAY $100,000 ITS LIKE CHARITY. I BET YOU SIT AT HOME AND BLOG ABOUT HOW AIDS AND CANCER BENIFITS ARE UNFAIR AND TO POLITICAL.AND AS FOR HAWAII THEY ARE SOME OF THE BEST WAVES ON THE PLANET WHY WOULD YOU NOT SPONSOR THE YOUTH THAT LIVES ON THE BEST WAVES ON THE PLANET!!

What an idiot - "Volcom gives $100K to 'charity'". Yeah right, multi-thousands of dollars to children already making obscene amounts of money. This isn't an article about how much greedy surf corporations DON'T give to the Surfrider Foundation, or the NSSA Scholarship fund, dumbass. "Youth Against Establishment"; what a crock of sh*!. I'm not trying to pick on Volcom here; all surf companies are in it for the exploitation of our once sacred sport and the resultant almighty dollar. Take your head out of your ass: "...Take away all the hopes and dreams of kids who can't afford to do the 'major' contests." Boo frickin' hoo, then maybe some of these kids won't be spoiled brats who have to work for a living to pay for their own surf trips. And furthermore this sellout publication won't print anything original about surfers taking adventures on their own dime and chances. To paraphrase a letter to the editor of this mag circa '

the quote was as follows: "f*$! professional surfing and f*$! you (Surfer Magazine)".
