LET'S GET WEIRD: A Q&A With Donavon Frankenreiter On His Guest Editor Issue

Interview by Zach Weisberg
Online Editor

Donavon "getting weird" after dark at Lowers for Assignment #1: Night Surfing at Lowers.

What was it like being the guest editor of SURFER?

“It was definitely a dream come true. It was amazing. It’s been my surfing bible for 20 odd years and I never thought id be able to be to direct an issue and have a huge part in what goes inside its pages.”

What did you hope to accomplish in your Guest Editor Issue?

“To be as weird as possible.”

What does it mean to get weird?

“There’s a standard formula to put a magazine together, and I just wanted to push the limits. I think we did that with the cover, and we pulled it apart with the photo spread. You have to take it out and flip it around and it’s different in a lot of ways. The way the whole thing came together is unique.”

What were some highlights from the experience?

When it was all done, and the issue was completed we had a couple of bottles of champagne, and it was Chris Mauro’s last day as the real Editor, and everyone had a great time. I’d say that was the highlight: the popping of the champagne.

Any lowlights, or things that were unexpectedly unpleasant about putting a magazine together?

Not really. It came out better than I thought it would. I had millions of ideas, and when you put it in the right people’s hands it just works out. I had an idea for a cover – and it came out better than I could have imagined. I wanted to do a bunch of photos, kind of like a collage that made a picture on the cover and it ended up being modeled after an old Hendrix record. Things just came together in a wonderful way to make this thing special.

Any warnings to the readers about the upcoming issue?

Watch out for the surfing rats – they’re incredible. I’m not sure if that’s going to catch on, but it’s pretty cool. Also check out the flip book too; it’s reversible both ways which is awesome. And Kevin Naughton’s story traveling up the west coast was great. I think there’s something for everyone in there – from kids to adults – everyone will get something out of it.

I look forward to the results. Meanwhile, until I see photos of you, Stu, pulling a soul arch and making the next section, stfu, Stu. You realize you're not a Steve, Stu, right?

Everthing in life is mind over matter if you don't mind it doesn't matter.... People need to worry about there on backyard and not stick there noise in others that are doing what works for them.

Yeah, I took issue with Stu's remarks. By deleting them, however, the editorial dept just lent them a whole new variety of credence. Fvck, man.

Repost Stu's comments, I missed them. I'm sure the mag won't be foolish enough to erase them again. That's probably the first thing Surfer didn't print in years, I think all the writers are so into slobbing the WCT scene they don't even know how to write something bad about it to erase.

Donavon is a great surfer; his Billabong ad where he soul arches under a massive Puerto lip is a classic. Somewhere along the line though, he placed himself in a seventies-style ditch, and he seems unable to get out of it. In fact he's been in it so long, he has become a cartoon figure, instead of a style creator that is fundamental to being successful in the surf and music arenas. Having said that, the cover does infact look cool, I sure hope the content does too. If not, then i suggest he take a hard look in the mirror: do you see a uniquely interesting surfer musician, or a guy with a pot belly who has smoked too much pot to know better.

donavon frankenreiter is one of he most amazing humans i have ever met. i have had the opportunity to work with him for the last 10 years. i have never met a more passionate, loving kind person who cares for the happiness of others more than himself. he gives his heart and soul into everything he does. donavon was so honored to have the opportunity to be the guest editor for surfer magazine that he worked on this everyday for 2 months. he chose all of the content and tried to let you see things a little bit differently. his cover is insane and the art direction is so cool. and is a very successful surfer and musician friend.

What is with the hate? A cartoon figure? When I look at Donavon Frankenreiter I see a style icon who isn't afraid to push the limits of what is "acceptable" to the average joe. Are you really going to get down on him for not conforming to whatever it is you want him to be? The man plays one mean guitar, and lyrically he is among the best. And what can you honestly say about his surfing? In the end you just sound like a catty highschool girl. Backhanded compliments and all. Perhaps you should ditch Surfer and subscribe to Seventeen magazine instead. Just saying...

my comment was only that this issue would probably suck. who cares about Donny's take on surfing? He's old and strange and stuck in some sort of time warp. 23 Chips can't get his 20 questions in but Donny gets an entire mag? Where are the priorities?

btw, I laugh at the suggestion that Donny isn't "Top 40(4)". He's just Pat O, Gerr etc. dressed in different Billabong marketing make-up.

so, I've read the mag and can only wonder why it even has Donny's name on it. Aside from a few totally un-weird and predictable items (a drive-thru plug for Benji...who would have seen that coming?), I didn't even notice a difference in the overall mag. At least when Joel and Mick had their issue, they opened it up to people and places in Oz we don't usually see. I'm sure the night-surf was fun for those there, but the pics were terrible. How much did Billabong have to pay to get Donny in there?
