The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau
Eddie Aikau was a Hawaiian surfer, lifeguard and legend. He dedicated his life to the ocean and ocean safety. Aikau saved countless lives the years that he guarded Waimea Bay. Tragically, he lost his own life to the ocean in 1978 at the age of 32 when his 16-member canoe capsized during a storm. With no rescue craft in sight, Eddie attempted the 12-mile open ocean paddle to shore to seek help. Although the rest of his crew was rescued, Eddie was never seen again. This event is dedicated to his memory and bravery.
Past winners of "The Eddie" include Clyde Aikau (Eddie's youngest brother), Keone Downing, Noah Johnson, Ross Clarke-Jones and Kelly Slater. First-time inclusions for this season's event are Kauai's sensational brother duo, Andy and Bruce Irons. Following is a complete list of invitees and alternates.
