Warnings Surge on Big Island

Hurricane Flossie on August 14, 2007 5am PST

TUESDAY AUGUST 14, 2007; 7:00AM PST- The State of Hawaii declared an emergency Tuesday morning as Hurricane Flossie (Cat 3 at 5am HST) spins ominously off of the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island. A hurricane warning and tropical storm watch is in effect for the Big Island of Hawaii, with numerous watches, warnings, and advisories issued for the entire State of Hawaii island chain.

On Monday evening Hurricane Flossie had been downgraded from a Category 4 to Category 3 hurricane. Nevertheless, Tuesday is the day much of the hurricane’s wind and rain is expected to make landfall on the Hawaiian Islands, most notably the Big Island of Hawaii.

According to the NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane watch, at 5:00am PST on Tuesday morning the center of Flossie was located 240 miles south east of Hilo, Hawaii. Flossie is on a track that will take her due south of South Point, Hawaii.

The surf is expected to reach 25 feet on the south east facing beaches of the Big Island according NOAA buoy readings. Tuesday morning a buoy located 185 miles southeast of Hilo had readings of 18’feet of open ocean swell.
