Chronicles Of A Subculture: Rick Griffin, Murphy, And Surfer Magazine

This Sunday, July 15, you are invited to attend Chronicles of a Subculture: Rick Griffin, Murphy, and Surfer Magazine at the Laguna Art Museum.

The lecture will highlight Griffin's work at SURFER, with artists and designers Art Brewer, Jim Evans, Hyatt Moore, Randy Nauert, John Van Hamersveld, and Mike Salisbury.

In late 1960, John Severson, founder of SURFER Magazine, agreed to run Griffin's cartoon strips. Severson had just published the first issue of SURFER and two issues later, "Murphy and the Surfing Contest" debuted.

The first in the Murphy series, the cartoon character would become a mascot to the surf world, making the cover of SURFER in 1962. In the end, SURFER published a total of 28 Murphy cartoon strips and 11 Griffin-Stoner Adventures, which featured Griffin and Ron Stoner as the main characters.

Griffin's work has been influential not only in the surf world, but throughout pop culture. Heart and Torch: Rick Griffin's Transcendance runs until September 30 at the Laguna Art Museum and features 140 pieces from 30 years of work.
