IRONS BROTHERS SCAMMED: Crooked Mortgage Lender Steals Millions

Unfortunately, these promises didn't deliver for the Irons' brothers. They've taken it as a lesson learned.

You hear about it every day. Another guy gets taken for all he has in a scam that sounds just a little bit too good to be true. Then, it turns out, it actually is too good to be true, and that optimism crashes into the bloody red depths of debt and deceit. You hear about it every day. But it's not every day that it happens to you.

That's exactly what happened to Bruce and Andy Irons recently. After being approached by former Kauai resident, James Lull, who served as the branch manager for U.S. Financial Mortgage Corp. to make big investments with the promise of high-yielding returns in 1998, the once-reputable mortgage lender has filed for bankruptcy. And the Irons brothers, along with dozens of other investors, will likely lose millions.

Sources say Lull could owe investors nearly $50 million dollars as a result of a "Ponzi Scheme" gone awry. Lull's scheme thrived for a while. He would repay early investors with capital obtained from later investors, but at some point the well of prospects ran dry. His empty promises began to catch up with him in December of 2007 when he filed for bankruptcy.

In an article published by the Kauai Garden Island News, Lull was quoted as saying, "A long time ago the money that I borrowed was used for what I said, and down the road it wasn't."

The Honolulu Advertiser reports that the Irons are owed one million dollars by Lull for a series of unpaid loans dating back to 1998. The brothers aren't alone in their losses, as many Kauai families have also suffered as a result of investing with Mr. Lull. Lull has recently taken up residence in Washington.

"Basically [Lull] promised them the world and couldnąt deliver," says the Irons' manager, Blair Marlin. "It was a lot of money invested between the two, and is still a very sensitive subject, but the boys are doing alright. They've taken this whole experience as a lesson learned: If things sound too good to be true, then they probably are.˛

The Irons just got finished up surfing in Coolangatta, Australia competing in the 2008 Quiksilver Pro, trying to earn back a little bit of their losses.

Just another example of how the surf industry ruins lives. College should be manditory for pro surfers and Billabong, Quik etc. should pay for it. Out of the water these guys are sitting ducks.

bro..going to college would not have helped. all surfers are not retards, they just got taken by a criminal...happens every day to mba's and phd's. you are an idiot.

you're right. the surf industry has a long history of producing smart decision-makers. let's not encourage anyone to get an education.

It sounds like they took a risk that didnt pay off. If it would have they would be stoked. But it didnt so they are bummed. I think that it is not alltogether fair to say they were cheated. They made the bad descition, if they would have invested their money in a wise investment with long term yeild they wouldnt be singing the blues right now.

Wow Wally you don't sound bitter or jealous at all. I'm sure you have made amazing decisions at every turn with your college education. I doubt you have ever made a mistake. Seems to me like these guys are doing pretty well without going to college.

yeah, you're right. It's not a long life after surfing...just what, 50, 60 years to make that money last? They appear to be right on track. A few more good investments and they'll be set. An education doesn't stop people from making stupid decisions, but it certainly helps people understand a bit better what decisions are risky in the first place. I'm not sure how you argue against surf companies backing education for their riders. As for my decisions, it's index funds heged by some bond funds for me. The day you see me give some schmo a million bucks on "sure thing" is the day I outsurf Andy at Pipe (meaning it'll never happen).

Wally - you sound like a right twat. People make bad decisions some times and these boys have money so the seriousness of it is elevated by the amount of expendable cash they're able to invest. You learn from your mistakes and I'm sure the Irons Bro's have done just that.

Wally - you are an idiot after all. Have you never noticed how academics struggle in the real world? Most can't even tie their shoe laces.
Posted Fri Mar 7, 2008, 12:14 PM — By wally
yep, you're right. I take it back. There's no difference between an educated surfer and an "academic" and there's no need for an education in general. Clowns.

Wally, that happens all the time. I don't supose that movie stars, everyone in high competion - Tiger Woods, kelly, Raikkonen and so on, are doing that bed. I don't think you live in the real world. Of course you can say that knowledge and qualifications the more, the better... that was never in question.

Lots of people are getting taken, educated and uneducated. Just look at the real estate mess. What happens is that people are too trusting sometimes, and then the one taking the money for investing gets into trouble and turns to dishonest or illegal ways, in a panic. That's where the trouble starts. Unfortunately, he takes others with him. Just go by the saying - If it sounds too good to be true, it is. Don't think you're the exception to the rule. You will only be a casualty if you think otherwise.

The Irons brothers are definitely not the smartest tools in the shed, but I agree that anyone can get ripped off. I'm sure this guy won't show up at the local beaches in Kuai, else he find himself learning how to swim with concrete shoes.
