SO CAL ICON DIES: R.I.P. Jim "Burrhead" Drever

Iconic surfer, Jim "Burrhead" Drever, died October 2, 2008. He passed away at South Coast Hospital in Laguna Beach near his residence in Three Arch Bay overlooking Salt Creek. Burrhead lived until age 86 and died peacefully after a battle with terminal cancer. He began surfing in 1937, at age 15, but took time to pursue his second passion of aviation during World War II. After the war, he returned to California and reconnected with his love of the ocean.

By 1952, Burrhead had made a pilgrimage to the North Shore where he met surfing legend, George Downing. Downing equipped him with the elements necessary to return to California and begin designing boards. Burrhead’s presence, from Imperial Beach to Los Angeles, helped progress surfing and board design in Southern California during its burgeoning years along the coast.

While Burrhead’s contributions to early Southern California surf culture and board design are undeniable, he valued a life of privacy and a personal surf experience. He shared his enthusiasm for surfing with his children and was deeply loved by his family and all those who knew him. His son Matt explained, “His entire life revolved around the ocean and he surfed simply because he loved to.”

According to his family, Burrhead was a man of humility, and wouldn’t have desired the attention garnered by a memorial gathering or paddle-out. Therefore, at this time there are no plans for a service to be held. He is survived by his two sons, Matt and Tony, and four grandchildren.

Dreyer served the US proudly in World War II.

It was an honor and a pleasure to have surfed a few times with Mr. Drever here in IB, when he came down to surf with Mr. Holder. He was an old-style waterman, steeped in the culture of surfing, who always took the time to talk to my brother, Jim, and I, as well as all the other gremmies of the time. His presence in the water made us feel safe and protected. We will not forget him.

Dempsey Holder, the Dean of the Tijuana Sloughs, had fond members of surfing with Mr. Drever back in the 1940s. He is one of the last of the legends who surfed the Sloughs back in the 1930s and 40s. WiLDCOAST expresses our condolences to the family of Mr. Drever

Burr was a man of extraordinary kindness, good character and honesty. He was a wonderful, patient and loving father, a devoted grandfather and a father-in-law that any woman would be blessed to have. Burrhead's wisdom, knowledge and experience were vast, yet after a conversation with him you invariably realized that you had learned something, but you had not been "taught". His nature led him to live a life of humble simplicity that was inspiring to many of us. Burr lived well, loved much and rode easy along the roads of and waves his life. We all love and miss you dearly, Burr.

I never did call him Mr. Drever. He was always Burrhead. And be it in the water, on the beach or just hangin' out in Matts garage, it was always an honor to be in his presence. And if Burr was speaking, you would be wise to listen up. Cuz it was going to be a helluva great story, or a valuable education. Neither one forcefully imposed, but rather shared from the heart, soul and the mind of a legendary waterman, mechanical genious (BurrGyver) aeronautical engineer and all around major dude. Burr had a very good life and he will be missed. But it's good to know his tradition remains with Matt and Tony. Jim Drever was one of the Greats of the Greatest Generation and I hope somebody writes a book about the life and times of Burrhead.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Drever in the last few months of his life. I can't begin to tell you what a pleasure it was to spend the time I shared with him. He had a way about him - just made me feel comfortable in his presence. I suspect if you knew him, you know what that was like. My condolences to his family and friends.
