SLATER APPEARANCE FEE: The Search For Keeping Kelly On Tour

Webcast Review; Mundaka Cancelled

He doesn't need the money...but we need him!

I'm not sure where Rip Curl's Search is going to take the WCT. But if surf fans had a say in it, the good folks in Torquay would put down the map and pick up the wallet and start searching for an appearance fee to pay Kelly Slater.

Watch video highlights from the Finals.

"He's the best in the world," said Jake Paterson during a verbal en garde with commentator Peter Mel during Slater's quarterfinal match against Andy Irons at Sanpper Rocks yesterday.

Not that he needed to, but Kelly Slater firmly established what we already know: He is the best in the world. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the Tiger Woods of surfing. He is the one everybody else chases. He is the one everybody else watches. He is the reason difficult moves such as a foam climb or a sweeping wrap around cutback are now merely “transitional” moves, to be swept aside while we wait to see what spontaneity follows. No disrespect to World Champion Mick Fanning, but it is clear, Slater is a dynasty. He is our dynasty. The dynasty has not ended. It will not end. He is our 1980s San Francisco 49ers, our ’90s Dallas Cowboys, our 2000 New England Patriots. He is Jordan, Ali, and Schumacher all wrapped up into one fast and stylish wave-riding machine.

And what is a World Tour event without Slater competing in it? Well, it will produce a champion. It just won't produce the champion. It's left wanting, even with icons like Fanning, Irons, and Parko on tour. A tour stop without Slater isn't really a competition, it's more like a practice session, a warm up, an exhibition. Competitors and fans alike are left wondering, "what if?"

Here's hoping Slater shows up at Bells. And the appearance fee? Kelly can give it to charity!

WEBCAST PRODUCTION; NO MUNDAKA; QUIK DRAW MCKLINEY

The best things to come out of Quiksilver Pro webcast production was Jake Paterson's candor. He pointedly disagreed with his colleagues on a number of occasions and he did so with polite yet unquestioned authority. The big bomb shell Paterson dropped was that the Mundaka event had been cancelled. He said it early in the broadcast during the weekend, and he never mentioned it again, nor did Martin Potter elaborate. This leads me to believe that somebody at the ASP put the kybosh on Paterson. Control is the name of the game.

Potts, Todd Kline, and Peter Mel did a great job. Sean Dougherty is always good, offering more than a touch of Australian surfing colloquialisms for us Seppos to digest. Overall the commentators were informative, they were insightful, they were themselves. The pretty girl in the tower didn't offer much and she seemed nervous. If you are after equal opportunity I'd go directly to Layne Beachley. She is a fabulous speaker, she is very smart, and she is opinionated. Commentating a surf comp is very, very difficult, especially when conditions are boring. Overall the Quik crew did a great job with a difficult situation.

I'm not so sure about the Jet Ski cam. Okay, I get it. It's a unique angle. But is it useful? Does it add or detract? I could do without it. More often than not, it did nothing for me. Now I applaud the effort, but I challenge the webcast crew at ASP to rethink or retool that concept. The only enjoyable Jet Ski commentary came from Troy Brooks when the Yellowfin tuna started to boil. However, I do not need to be told at full distorted volume that "over there is where the surfers takeoff." Frankly, the Jet Ski camera angle itself isn't as good as the beach angle. I think the Jet Ski cam, as an asset to the webcast, can be of use, but its use needs to be reassessed. The quality of the audio fluctuates, and the director of the production should put his best “color” guy on the ski, not the “B” squad. Going to an iffy audio asset with an iffy commentator puts the production in double jeopardy. In short, when they cut to the ski, Kliney should be their man.

The use of the “Quik Draw” teleprompter was an added plus. These poor souls have hours of downtime to deal with, and this production asset was just that: an asset. When pros like Potter are breaking down turns in slow motion and have a graphical tool to do so it is a good thing. Bravo. I think they could have a lot of fun with the teleprompter, not just in the water, but on crowd shots and lineups, too. Potter and Kline could have diagramed receding hairlines or the micro blend lycra breakdown of certain bikinis.

Good critique of the webcast. The water cam is only good for an occasional paddle by shot- we want to see the wave straight on to determine how well it is surfed. And you gotta get a better camera guy on the main land cam- it was probably Gordo my beloved Ozzie friend who likes to move up and down with every bottom and top top turn... gives me a headache. Pottz is a legend and Kline did a good job. I caught a couple heats of the Roxy and Jodie Cooper is a very irritating and bitter woman who shouldn't be behind the microphone. Too bad the waves sucked for this event... Slater surfed great on that wider board. Mick will bounce back. Flores surfs like a little kid with a stick up his butt. Bede is improving but still looks pretty stiff. Would have been cool to see Andy in good waves. Parko was underscored and Bede was overscored in that heat- doesn't style count anymore? All in all the contest sucked because the waves sucked. And Bells is crap with its slopey slow walls... it's a longbo

I emailed the ASP about the John Madden type on screen diagram graphics that until this year, hadn't been used. Maybe they took that suggestion to task and now this year we are seeing the results. Also suggested that they put the heat times onscreen in real time so that you don't have to refresh the page to see the time left in the heat. Common sense people, common sense!

Great article. Am I the only one that finds Mick's surfing, well, kind of boring? I mean the guy is definitely a lip hitting machine, and links moves at boggling speeds, but I find it monotonous. On the other hand, Kelly's repetoire is so much more unpredictable. The guy does something different on almost every wave, and still throws buckets like nobody's business. I know alot people think Kelly is overscored...I couldn't disagree more. I think the judges generally hold him to a higher standard. PS. where do I send my share of Kelly's appearance fee?

My two cent's worth. I thought Mitch Ross (ski cam) did a great job and brings enthusiasm and energy to the show. he is also very knowledgable and brings in come good points. Slater - the guys has to retire some day. I think we should all let him do it on his own terms. that said, if heis looking to bow out he is staying in at the expense of someone elses spot( cansdell). still, prefer to see him surf then 80% of the 44. parko, underscored big time. where was variety this time round? admit that it is hard with the surf conditions but there was very little punting and no invovation. micks surfing was predictable. slater probably the only one that could mix it up a little. the judges should score people very hard when they don't put variety into it. and smash those without style. quiksilver big ups for doing a good job on the overall cast. lets see if everyone else can step it up again. the adverts got a little too much. quik should create a story with their ads

I dig Mitch Ross but agree that the ski-cam should be ditched. Maybe keep it as an alternative angle on replays (since they play so many of them), but don't use it live. Pottz, Kline and Snake all did a great job as usual and Sean Doherty is always great value. Have to agree with Dane after witnessing this event: the best, or most progressive surfing, isn't happening on tour. Maybe it was the inconsistency of the waves, but the surfing was all too predictable most of the time. And Kelly was underscored in the final. His highest scoring wave was much better than Mick's for mine. My two cents worth...

Great review Scott - sounds like you were as glued to your computer as I was. The overall web production - creatively and technically was the best I have ever watched. However they really could have done so much more with the adverts; the 4 or 5 they showed were fine but by my 25th view it was a bit maddening. Quik and LG both have so many resources they surely could have come up with a more diverse suite of spots. I understand that they are trying to target as many viewers as possible with the ads - but for someone who watches most of the broadcast it's just way too redundant. Slater was definitely underscored in the final - his big score should have been a 9.5 at least. I was blown away by the level of his surfing and even more impressed by his superior competition skills. Before this event I was wondering if he might look dated in the presence of Dane, Taj, Mick and Jordy - after I think that the new and new-new schools better start doing their homework.....Whole experience was such a stoker overall!

you guys are right: Kelly is the best surfer ever. But the best surfer, now, is Parko, you just have to look at jeremy flores style to understand that...

Slat8r is back where he belongs. I remember being in hawaii in 2006 at the pipeline final watching A.I. pip him right in last couple of minutes, i disagreed with the judges then he surfed better than Andy. But hey he still won the title for the eighth time. His victory in Quiksilver pro just showed everyone he is still the best in the world.Lets hope he stays on tour till he gets 10 world titles. His progressive surfing is without doubt superior to the others and his free flowing movements on a wave are awe inspiring. The King has never looked better!!!

Even the commentators were saying "Slater gets so much more critical than any other guy on every turn." I agree with this, and it really sets him apart from anyone else on the tour - Mick and Taj come closest, AI isn't even close notwithstanding his smooth & beautiful style. But Slater is critical, powerful, and stylish too. So, how is it that anyone can possibly beat him in good conditions? What is it the judges look for? Only a certain number of turns in "critical sections"? If that's the case, are they simply staring at the nose of a surfer's board, counting "1, 2, 3..."? Of course, there's the luck of the draw: the right wave at the right time. If style points are considered, and style equals throwing the tail around, critical angling in on every turn, power & style, there is simply no one better than Slater. Not even close... ...except, maybe, Tommy!!!

I have been watching the webcasts for a few seasons now, and have seen the production value go up each year. This year I think they hit the mark with the Mel/Snake combo, and look forward to more commentaries from them. And I agree with alex - whoever worked the land cam that went up and down with each turn needs to be shown his product - it was very nauseating. Aside from that, I would like to see the full screen mode's on-screen timer and heat scores working correctly - it was stuck on the Taj-Ace heat for the whole last day, with no way to refresh it.

Bass you like to stir the pot eh? Appearance fee for Slater, that's pretty classic, but when you think about it, Tiger does get fees for showing up. Jetski cam was lame.

I agree that the jet ski cam is no good. I am watching the heat from the front like a judge and then it flips over to jet ski and you lose the flow of the athleteʻs performance. That review was spot on. Thanks to ASP for webcasts, incredible!

I was at the Surf Expo Orlando for the Trestles contest. They had a live feed that was as good as watching television. I'd trade all the technical extras for a clearer image.

One biggie that you forget to mention was that MAC users could not watch the webcast. That download on Quiksilver .com was an .exe file for Microsoft only. Lame! Nice review. Quik/ASP did a good job, room for improvement though. I see everyone else is picking up on the Mundaka story now.

While no doubt Slater has redefined power surfing, you're not giving credit to any of the other surfers on the ASP by proposing an appearance fee. I'm sure he's a very wealthy man, but no whore. Even the mere mention of an appearance fee makes me think that Mr Bass thinks the ASP is suffering from a bit of an inferiority complex and needs him to draw. It's Bells! Not Virginia Beach or Chiba, Bells will draw without him. It's an amazing place with an amazing lineup of surfers. If Slaters wants to quit, that's fine, let him quit. The ASP will not go the way of the Dodo, and there are stacks of great surfers out there. The NBA is as thrilling as ever without Jordan, Man U still draws without Beckham, Ferraris are still Ferraris without Schumaker. Legends will always pack it in and they'll do it when they want. Just quit whining for them to carry on. It's like getting nostalgic for your prom night and still thinking, 20 years later that it was the best night of your lif

lets be honest unless the contest is held in great surf to me its pretty boring. I don't need to judge the commentators or cameraman. oh yeah they are all great surfers to me. If anything I hate is the webcast freezing just at the critical time.

Didn't miss Shmoo at all. Can't take his delivery...... A long camera shot from a Kirra apartment would have added a nice viewing dimension to the webcast and why couldn't the ski cam have moved further up the point. Always wanted to look around the point for the sets coming in.....Jordy's own arrogance sealed his fate when he said he should be in the finals. He surfed like crap..I'm beginning to tire of the hype already. Great overall coverage by the Quik crew....Look out for Timmy Reyes this year and ong live the King. Nothing like punking the Champ at his home break. Awesome. Seppo my ass.
