guys like the bra boys are fucking assholes, they attacked bodyboarders that discovered waves like teahupoo, shipsterns, and many more in south america that were only a deam drop to surfers in the 80´s. I´m from Argentina, and surfed many times heavy pits everywhere, mostly in chile, and no crazy "local" gave me a bad face. Just because down here things are different, if you charge hard, then you have your respect. And just for the record, this fucking assholes will not survive a minute if they started playing the though guy down in latin america, people can get killed easily around here, and no one will miss a stupid rockstar wannabe.

Wait....wait....no....it's too late...you and all the other ad-packed bog-rolls in waiting have been promoting the ugly side of localism for f*****g years. That's how come thuggish cock jockeys like JBG, Koby Abberton and Kaia Alexander have been making a living - they couldn't have done it without you. And now that breaks the world over are getting infested with it - often when there aren't even any locals out there - tried taking a trip to the Mentawais lately? - you're trying to take the moral high ground? Gimme a f*****g break - go and sell another double-page spread to someone else with all the moral compass of a dog on a croquet lawn.

This issue is comical to me. way to late for discussion. everything is exploited by the brands we love. "the search", great idea to keep your hardcore roots, only, oops, giving out locations defeats the very idea of your marketing message. but wait, there's more..."somewhere in mexico"! gee, this'll be hard. Support the small brands, make sure they have a soul first. I was there, didn't film it, didn't brag, and oh, by the way, half the spots in Sumatra have different names. Pre boat trip. yes there was a time. hide your discoveries, anyone who finds them legitimately, deserves to join you,,,, peace, hippie air booster

Simon is right. The magazines glorify these scumbags, pandering to them. They're feral, uncouth, uncivilized, and unfettered thugs. The surfing media needs to stop glorifying their inappropriate behavior.
Posted Sun Jun22, 2008, 3:10 AM — By Paul QLD
Absolutely agree. I dont go near the brands these days. The message they are sending out is trouble maker = flawed genius. I get sick and tired hearing stories glorifying the M Petersons, Abbertons, even Occy. The brands just want to get publicity. I dont even go into the major surf stores any more, they'r ejust boutiques anyway.

I've always been the one to drive a bit further or walk down the beach a little to get away from crowds. Unfortunately, even somewhere like New Zealand surfing has become so popular that heavy crowds at name spots are the norm and ugly localism is becoming more and more widespread. Unfortunately localism is a human reaction to excessive competition for a limited resource i.e. quality waves. That's a direct result of the packaging and mass marketing of surfing as a cool sport. So don't be the one to bitch about it, Surfermag, you were one of the main factors that created it in order to sell advertising space.

the surf media is terrible at reporting anything negative. The commentary is terrible and kiss ass, they seem to be staryeyed by the surfer they are interviewing. There is no charles barkley or someone like that, that ask the real questions. Like for instance AI had a problem with oc's and it was swept under the rug by the media. Another instance is 3 years ago in france someone tested positive for drugs and no one would say who it was. This shit happens in no other sport and needs to stop if surfing wants to taken seriously.

I love to surf, but don't consider myself a "surfer" anymore for this very reason! Plus, roller blading is way more fun anyway...
Posted Tue Jun24, 2008, 2:50 AM — By miksurf
More BS from the Henry Rollins wannabe, Scott Bass. The only problem is Henry Rollins rocks, and has a cool outlook—but Bass is clueless. A warmonger. Localism: Respect the local crew, and work your way up. If the locals are all losers, go somewhere else and just surf. They'll be gone soon enough, or will grow out of it. Or the worst case scenario will happen, like in La Jolla, and they'll rot in jail. Giving it too much publicity is bad in America, because the whole country is fad driven. Wave a flag, the lemmings will chase it.

As a (french) surf journalist i have always boycotted these surf fascists. We don' t have to promote-even if done undirectly-localism : it sucks, it stinks. I live in reunion island, surf st leu, and trust me : localism is a fucking disease which is the surf translation of racism or xenophobia.

i think localism is a bit necessary.im a local myself down here in brasil and ive been living on the same spot for 21 years and surfing for 11 years and i dont like crowd at all specially those haulys that only surf on weekends and they dont respect nobody, they think they own the sea.so i think is good to have a local crew, so that way we keep everything in order.dont take me wrong tho, im totaly against violence, but what im trying to say is that people need and should respect locals, cuz is just a matter of respect for people that been surfing there for years. peace!
Posted Tue Jul 8, 2008, 4:44 PM — By jay
It makes me laugh that the bra boys, have made a movie about trying to keep out drugs and violence, but i know they are all drug users and the one starting trouble and they get paid for this. That ait surfing.

"Like for instance AI had a problem with oc's and it was swept under the rug by the media." - Scott Bass Hey Scott, maybe the media just figured nobody could be that dumb without being on something... Localism is good. Locals are like lifeguards, they keep the kooks from hurting themselves.
Posted Wed Jul 9, 2008, 6:53 PM — By RowdyRoddyPiper
I forgot to add... maybe if you hippies learned to fight rather than whine like little girls, this really wouldn't be an issue.
Posted Mon Jul14, 2008, 8:36 AM — By Waller
While a definetly agree that the media more often than not endorses uneccasary localism, localism can be a neccasary thing if used correctly. No decent surfer should let an out of towner drop in on them, however an exchange of peacful words is usually more productive than violence. The main problem here is the media making extreme localism look cool, helping out the bra boy meat heads and the wolf pack.
Posted Mon Jul14, 2008, 6:48 PM — By andrew
Yes, "localism" sucks...No one likes stinkeye in the middle of a epic sesh. But have you ever thought that the reason braddah is eyeing you up is cuz your dumbass just dropped in on him? I'm haole, I live in hawaii, I learned to surf here, and I've NEVER had a problem with "locals" as long as I didn't fuck up first. If all these "surf schools" would teach the kooks manners/respect first, malama kai second, and THEN how to stand up, we wouldn't even have this discussion or this problem. How would you feel if you were out doing what you loved, and some arrogant prick decides that his shoulder-hopping ass is somehow "entitled" to a wave with 10 better surfers sitting deeper, in better position? And the same goes for SUPs and longboarders who catch every wave. Yes, it's a limited resource....So don't be greedy, and you won't get cracks from the boys.

Jesus, I'm beginning to get it. What can you expect when it seems that hardly anyone can even spell better than a 4th grader? Like I said, localism = stupidity. And by the way, dropping in is NEVER cool, anywhere, by anyone, of whatever ability, and it can always be settled with a quiet word. That is NOT localism, just civilization.
Posted Sun Jul20, 2008, 1:33 AM — By brett
unfortunatly localism is the necessary big brother the world of surfing needs.
Posted Sun Jul20, 2008, 6:38 PM — By raiders
I drop in on whomever comes to my spot. Its not good karma to just surf wherever brah...come to Charley's and you'll get your dropped in all by all of us. You want some, come and get it. We got a welcoming committee.
Posted Mon Jul21, 2008, 6:33 PM — By jeff
localism = stupidity. to the raiders, brett, andrew (are you sure you don't spell that with an "ie"), Roddy "pie boy" Piper, and all the other "i'm a tough guy ani't that cool" dumbasses, give it up. you can't paddle out let alone surf therefore you feel the repressed need to get gunned up. it is the likes of idiots like you guys i have seen get the most hassled in all the lineups I've been in. just open your mouth, get loud, and walla...instant dipshit. Yeah, you all know exactly who you are.

"Therefore whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them" Matt.7:12a "Do not be decieved,God is not mocked;for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." Galatians 6;7 "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men" Romans 12:18 THINK about these TRUTHS okay? And we wonder why there are wars in the world? We can't even get along doing the most bitchin' thing in the world! Have a nice day -I mean it!! Life is too short to sweat this stuff!
Posted Tue Jul22, 2008, 5:27 PM — By ianmacduff
I think "Raiders" et al betray themselves with their moronic grasp of basic grammar and the issue. So stay in YOUR spot, (jesus, you only have one, poor mugs,) with your 'welcoming committee' of knuckleheads, and with your dicks jammed up each other's asses, and the rest of us will continue to travel, surf new and different spots and have a hell of a lot more fun than you poor, frustrated, ignorant home-bound suckers. BTW Fredo, we don't need the bible to teach us lessons in civilization; more wars have been fought over religion than will ever be over surf.
Posted Tue Jul22, 2008, 11:01 PM — By Fredo Z
Okay Ian just forget that those verses are in the bible. Look at them at face value, or pretend that Noam Chomsky said them, or better in your case, Don Redondo; Ya reap what ya' sow. . . Do unto others. . . Live at peace with all. . . Wow, sounds pretty subversive and antagonistic! Better to just ignore the whole set of values found therein with a cliche phrase from a religion professor at community college. You need to be more open hermano!
Posted Thu Jul24, 2008, 4:30 PM — By ian
Fredo, you are clearly a gentleman and a scholar and I completely agree with what you were saying, and I agree with the values represented in those passages from the bible. I have always thought we only needed one commandment, "Do unto others..." but I'm just not religious. How did you know I'm a Noam Chomsky fan though?

Localisim is for idiots. No one can claim they own the water. Flip side is have respect for one another in the water when visiting a new break. I have been surfing since 1972 and I had these punks yelling at me I wasn't a local yet I have surfed the beaches longer than they have been on the planet. I let my surfing do the talking. I charge hard at 45 years old, maybe not blasting 6 foot airs but still take Big drops hard bottom turns and blast lip or get barreled. You reap what you sew. I used to get agro in the water to a degree and found i didn't enjoy myself, now back to my roots of why I surf. Best part about it , a few of us are on the same page and have our secret spots these so called locals will never know about. HE who has fun has the last laugh. PEACE MAN

Why, what's the nice side of localism?
Posted Fri Aug 1, 2008, 4:25 AM — By I have a dream
Swami's at the break of dawn: as the light fills in the lineup, the earlyirds go cross-eyed from the sight of a flash mob of 750 cute 12-year-old girls on bodyboards, carpeting the lineup from Boneyards to the channel in a vast red tide of good will. They all know each other, and ride pretty well, stacking about 50 riders on each wave: bumping rails, laughing, zipping the inside while hundreds more move into position behind them. What the hell would the locals do? I have a dream.

All the dipshits complaining here are: A:People that haven't paid there dues by surfing heavy waves and earning respect from the, "locals", that are giving them a hard time. B:Kooks that haven't aquired the skills to surf at that particular spot. C:retards that come out with no regard, no respect for the natural pecking order. D: All of the above... There are plenty of spots to surf where you won't be hassled go there.
Posted Wed Aug 6, 2008, 11:54 AM — By Enormo
Chris, Really? Case in point: I lived in Venice Beach for 7 years and got hasseled on a semi-regular basis over one of the shittiest waves in So-Cal. A: Venice Breakwater is not a heavy wave. (I grew up surfing Blacks, Horseshoe, Hospitals, Simmons etc.) I surf better than most of locals in Venice. So 7 years of regularly surfing that dump doesn't count as dues? B: A retarded three legged goat has the skills to surf Venice Breakwater. C: There is no "order" to the wave or the lineup at Venice Breakwater and I don't need to snake anybody to catch my share of waves. D: There aren't plenty of spots in the area. Everything else within a 5 mile radius is one big closeout 99% of the time. Next you'll try to tell us that Venice is the ONLY spot in the world that's like this. Locals are just angry children who lash out because their daddies touched their buttholes. BTW... E: You are an idiot.

It is known that boys act like IDIOTS under the security of the pack, add a few beers into that and you have a pretty heavy combo!! Yes they talk in that movie about their insecurities about and that's why a tight pack gets formed to feel stronger, but... Locals should protect from hazards protect all spots that you surf because NOT ONE of those wannabe (machos in packs) own any beach. So you can't claim shit unless you have the paper that shows ownership. 99% of those tuff bra's are pussys out of their groups. Go fucking solo in life and see if you'r really that strong!! Groups are great, I played serious rugby in my life but throwing punches makes you weaker save those to protect your kids, dad, mom, wife if you have to, not to make a fucking movie abou that!!!
Posted Thu Aug14, 2008, 8:51 PM — By Obey
Whateva Mr. T by the way hoale is the way you spell it. If your local break is getting a bit chaotic than you know how everyone who surfs Blacks feels, only you guys come here from Brazil and do the same thing you describe. NO respect is given. I guess no one wins ey?
Posted Thu Aug14, 2008, 10:48 PM — By Mark Maiden
the bra boys and others like them are narrow minded and boreing. Grow up and realise their is more to life than your stupid little surfing world.

jeff - thanks for making my point. Just make sure you sign in before you paddle out...

I’ll tell you who isn’t a bro. Scott Chandler from Carlsbad. He paddles out on his SUP (standup Paddle Board) today in Oceanside runs over a guy then threatens to beat him and another guy up because he fell. Scott is a complete kook, who cares how many big waves you get towed into or how big you steamship surfboard is… must be taking to many steroids and lost his mind. He was freaking over 1-2 foot surf.

Reach down and taste the water. If it is salty, then guess what? SO ARE THE LOCALS!
Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 9:09 PM — By Fredo Z
Hey Mr. Obey, Check your pidgin/Hawaiian dictionary. The word is Haole. Many more of you should use spell check, you're giving away your lack of education! Sorry, but I'm sick of being be pegged with the "stupid surfer" stereotype.
Posted Thu Aug21, 2008, 2:20 AM — By the truth
I love to surf, I used to wear surf clothing frequently, but as I matured, I realized that the whole industry is targeting teenage girls. I no longer tell anyone I surf when I meet new people (either through business or socially). When I was a kid, if you surfed you were different, and when you met a fellow surfer there was a bond instantly. Not so any longer, I think the people who talk about surfing the most are the ones who really cannot surf a lick. Anyway, localism sucks, the bra boys are white trash, and anyone who claims local is an idiot. See you out at Pleasure Point....

Gangs are gangs. The bra boys are a bunch of faggots. If they think they are bad asses put them in the hood in LA or NY and see how they f'n hang. Wow they are so tough because they can beat up bodyboarders and people that drop in on them. Absolute butt wrangler s hit.
