WonderWall: Laird Hamilton Continues the Franchise

The franchise.

Laird Hamilton does things his own way. Whether it's towing in to massive Teahupoo, catching 80-foot waves at Outer Spreckelsville or standup paddling into mammoth walls at Peahi, Hamilton has always been the leader. Not a leader, the leader. No single surfer is more recognized or well known than Laird Hamilton, and his franchise has blossomed without the help of America's surf garment industry. No Quiksilver. No Billabong. No Volcom. Just Laird. Just legend. Call it Lairdgend.

The Laird franchise continues to grow with the latest offering from Mr. Hamilton, his clothing line branded WonderWall. And again Laird is doing it his own way. You won't find WonderWall at you your local PacSun outlet alongside the known retail surf garment commodities such as Roxy, Quiksilver or Volcom. Hamilton's line is only available at Steve & Barry's, a chain of retail outlets that has successfully married the concepts chic and cheap.

"Steve and Barry's approached me, and once I understood their whole business and learned more about it, I just felt it was an incredible opportunity," said Hamilton. "I've been sort of incubating. I haven't been with any US based clothing line up until this point."

The first thing you'll notice upon walking into Steve & Barry's is a big sign that reads, "Everything in Store $8.99". Everything? Really? I purchase four of Hamilton' WonderWall knit golf shirts and a WonderWall tee shirt. My total expenditure: $54. That's five shirts folks, only $54.

"I have a lot of people thanking me for coming out with the line because now they can afford to buy stuff, and that's really a big part of it for me," Said Hamilton. "My mom was a single parent and we used to get two pairs of pants and two shirts for the whole school year. There is a lot of self-esteem that surrounds your clothing when you're a young person, and plus just being able to afford cool stuff. You start talking about surf clothing and you are talking $40, $60, $80 bucks in some cases."

With the economy stalled and the price of everything moving up due to gas price woes, the concept of inexpensive surf clothing is intriguing. Mix the cost with the legitimacy of an offering from a true surf legend, a Lairdgend if you will, as opposed to the say the illegitimate Hollister surf offering, and you'll want to at least take a look. Five cool shirts for a cool $54 -- dude, I'm in.

Word. How stupid does SurferMag think their readers are? Do they really believe we haven't noticed that Scott Bass is a sycophantic moron on a SUP?

I hate the idea of affordable clothes! And what's with that picture? Do I need to be able to do pushups like Laird if I want to buy his clothes?? I'm going back to quiksilver fellas...

From the above comments it seems the established corpo garments folks are a bit sensitive. Yeah, I hate affordable clothes from outside the surf image industry too! Give bass a break, yeah he may ride a SUP (which is lame) but an article on affordable clothes from Laird Hamilton doesn't seem outside the realm of SURFER.And besdies that, I bet Quiksilver is stoked on Laird. Growing the pond!

>> ... a Lairdgend if you will... I won't, thanks.

So, Surfermag promoting more products and not covering the actual endless fund itself. How many ads now make up the magazine. I dont evenbuy the shit rag no more as it is only adverts. Sick of surfing being used to sell everything from cheap line rental to 4x4's. Here's a tip... don't buy any surf mags and give the money to charity instead.

No question Laird is the man but Slater is and has been the most famious surfer outside the industry for years. The clear overstatement does not indear the observant reader. Laird coud have cashed in big but he did not sell out, on this one. Good for him.

what are you guys, a bunch of rich yuppies who donʻt even surf good. Laird rules you, he owns your world!

Ahhh... C'mon...why do you have to be like that? C'mon, really. Alert. Alert. Internet tough guys ahead.

Leave Lance alone, he's only trying to help. What's up with all the Hate on Lard? He's a stud. Even, if he breaks boards for fun, even.

Guys, I gots to admit I've burned a lot of reefer so my memory may not be up to par, but let me recall that LH used to be in the surf mags as a kid, he acted in surf movies, he modeled for clothing lines, he hawked his own line of boarding equipment, sold for Da Kine, Oxbow, Lightning Bolt to name a few. Done more than his share of interviews, videos, and catering to the Hollywood and Food Channel wannabes. I guess that is not selling out because he didn't compete on the ASP. He was never a ripper, but a big wave rider. I do think it's great to put out affordable clothes and wish him all the success in the world. Just don't say he is pure as the dust on my twin fin. Thanks, HPD.

I admire Laird because he isn't the average surfing competitor clone. He's an individual, on his own trip, like his dad. I imagine most of the negative posts come from industry gladrag pushers. I hear they are suffering low sales from the recession. And, now, Laird comes out with a low-cost line that's bound to take away some of their market share. Boo-hoo. No doubt some of the guys on the dream tour are going to have to get real jobs. If anyone deserves endorsement money, it's Laird. He's taken surfing to another level.

Super blatant ass-kissing. Scott, get a life. Laird might be a good surfer, but any Point Dume local will tell you what a kook he is in the water. The guy preaches "respect" when a camera's in front of his grill, but he's an egotistical prick in the water. Plus he's filled the lineup with a bunch of stand-up paddle janitor wannabe's. Go back to Kauai Laird. And take your Wallmart knock-offs with you.

Wow. I miss the good old days when I could just BAN people. Just kidding...not. Thanks for your insights.

it's funny to see how our world is shown in these few comments...all you f***** uped FASHION surfers and yuppies who are not even able to paddle out a channel. why don't you show Laird and Scott some respect? aren't you guys praying that we are all bros and should be hang loose? it's still about surfing and if someone buys cheaper clothes which have the same quality as your 50 $ t-shirt, it's even smarter in an economic way. it's nice to see that the jelousy of the others confirms our abilities..go and play some golf and stop sitting useless in the lineups, lying in our way!

A lot of angry posters. People need to relax. Don't dig the stuff? Don't buy it. And instead go buy your $60 HARDCORE boardshorts because everyone in orange county has them. Dorks!

Wow thats a lot of emotion about a t shirt! you guys do realise this is a clothing line right? You guys know there are things like global warming, global food shortages, war, earthquakes etc. get a grip people. by the way i thought the most well surfer in the world was kelly slater...a kellegend if you will...

Ah...More disfunction from the legion of internet tough guys.

Laird is a stud, and is one of the most dominant big wave surfers ever, but to call him the most well known surfer of all time, over Kelly Slater, is a stretch if you ask me. Also, for all around surfing ability, todays WCT crew eats the past alive. I hope Laird makes tons of money with Wonderwall so he can keep following his dreams, but lets keep a sense of reality.

Good luck Laird. For a guy who has done so much for surfing Laird shoud command more respect. Dare I say most who down him would hesitate and die, with thier schlong tucked between thier legs, trying what he pulls off. Also the guy has a heart, like doing alot of fundraising and promotion for his buddy Don King's documentary on autism "Beautiful Son" along with many other helpful projects. Open your eyes people this is America, land of the free and free enterprise! As far as SUP"s go they should change the name to NMFSA (NOT MEANT FOR SURFING AREAS). Great craft, best workout going, should not go out to a lineup and take over like they are everywhere. What if canoes came out and took off on you guys? Pretty safe too!

Have you met Laird? Have you surfed with him? He's a decent man, full of mistakes and successes. He's laughting at your anger and jealousy. Got something to say? Funny, you'd NEVER in a million years say it to his face. Will they make a movie about your life? Will Bassy have you on his show? Does anybody give a shit (outside of your family) about your simple life? If you're so cool, why are you reading this crap? Bored, like me. Good on ya Laird, I was poor as a kid too and kids ruthlessly make fun of the less fortunate. As you can see though Laird, it only makes you stronger. You'd crap you pants surfing the waves he does. Yeah, you!

crikey people..who would have expected such an outpouring of emotion over a few tee's?? Just as La Jolla Bird says, a few skint kids and teens may be able to buy some half decent clothes, cos you do give a shit when you are 14. If you didn't, lucky you. Your mummy was probably buying you the expensive stuff. And dear old surfer mag. You've changed a lot. My dad has every issue of Surfer mag here in the UK, and i've read 'em cover to cover. But you have lost something. Bring back Steve Hawk! Fair play to you for publishing these comments though. Most wouldn't...

Hey i've got nothing against Laird... just dogshit puns like "Lairdgend".

Credit to Laird of Hamiltonsville, he surfs bigger and harder than any of us ever will. But, and it's a big BUT, how is he making shirts for under 10 bucks? Sweat shop labour? Maybe. And if sweatshops aren't involved, where is the cotton coming from? Somebody, somewhere is getting screwed for the sake of profit and an "affordable" shirt. Has Fairtrade reached you guys yet?? Why not pay a bit more, get something less disposable and leave the labels in the surf shops. Check www.finisterreuk.com for an ethically idealistic clothing company. And before you start, I don't work for them.

The Steve and Barry's near my house smells like body odor and is overall not a fun place to shop. By the way, SUPs ARE lame.

I love the clothes. Good quality low price. However, I gotta wonder if they got permission by the band Oasis to use this brand name. I mean I love having my favorite song written on all my clothes, but when they came up with this name the song had to have at least been an inspiration. First thing I thought when I saw it in the store was "Oasis has a clothing line?"
