Judgement Days

"Like all great scenarios in sport, it came down to the wire—a real three on, two out, bottom of the ninth, seventh game of the World Series type of situation. And as the clock ticked down to under a minute, from out in the blue came the wave, and with it, a shot that would be heard around the surfing world. Rail to rail, toe to toe, Slater and Irons pushed each other to the brink at Backdoor. Irons, on the inside, took off. The beach held it's collective breath. Then, with fists raised and arms pumping, he was spit out way down at Off the Wall—a perfect 10. The beach went crazy. Hawaii went crazy."

"'Untapped' is a good way to describe vast coastal stretches from Maine to Georgia. The Outer Banks of North Carolina contain entire islands with no roads whatsoever. The Georgia Coast, with 80 miles of protected barrier islands and ten foot tidal pushes, is a wide-open adventure in waiting. 60 miles of wilderness islands lay between Charleston and its northern neighbor, Georgetown, SC—all of it accessible only by boat. I may no longer have Trestles in my backyard, but I have a 19 foot center console powerboat in my garage."

The SURFER Interview With Rizal Tanjung
by
Alex Wilson
"I hooked up with Danny Wills and Mick Campbell and went out on tour. I won a 3-star WQS in Bali and I made the finals in a contest in Japan. I was going to places like California, Hawaii, England—it was crazy. Every week I saw a different country. It was gnarly and I was broke. Eating nothing, just noodles and peanuts. But I was hungry to see the world and open the door for the kids back in Indonesia. I wanted to make a name for myself and make a name for Indonesian surfing. I look back now and I'm stoked. I learned the hard way and it created opportunities for the guys who came up after me. I learned a lot about life and I chased my dream."
