Even though the surfers were forced to deal with miniscule waves, wind wobble, cobblestones and dinged and broken boards on Sunday, there were, in the eyes of Galland, flashes of surfing brilliance. "I just want to give a shout out to the guys who stuck around and surfed. I went there on Sunday and, man, the surfing was good. Even on shitty, small waves, guys were just killing it. The surfing in those conditions showed how good these guys really are. I had not seen Dane Gudauskas or Mason Ho surf in crappy waves before and they were both so good that it was incredible. It wasn't Pipe, but one-to-two-foot San Miguel, and it was so neat to watch their approach in challenging conditions like that. And isn't that the essence of a pro surfer? It's not about surfing good on good waves, but ALWAYS surfing good no matter what the conditions. As far as being a pro surfer goes, that¹s just the nature of the beast."
While the 2006 No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta was a mere shadow of what all had hoped and planned for, the organizers and sponsors plan to be back in 2007. "Mother Nature punched us in the throat this year, but we'll be back south of the border next October," mused Galland. "The Mexican Surf Fiesta is just too good of a contest to not have a champion crowned for a 26th consecutive year. So I guess we¹ll just have to wait another year."
