VERY UN-CALIFORNIA: Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro Day Two

Last year's champ, Brent Dorrington, powering through sloppy conditions.

A cold, strong wind and overcast skies dominated much of the day on Wednesday, day two of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro. And with mostly blown out, 2-3 foot surf, it was certainly not the kind of beach day Southern California is famous for - surf or weather-wise. I’m not trying to be a downer here, but let’s face it: we’re in need of some good surf! Luckily for the competitors at Trestles, wavewatch.com has forecasted a new building SW swell expected to peak over the next few days.

Even with the conditions not prime, the overall vibe on the beach was a good one, as surfers and spectators alike were making the most out of the second day of the event. Today was a big day for some of the younger guys like Brent Dorrington of Australia: winner of last year’s Oakley Pro Junior at Trestles. Dorrington was a standout on the day and made the most out of so-so conditions: “The waves got much better about half way through my heat, with much bigger sets,” Dorrington explained.

The continuously unsettling news of the recent fatal shark attacks in San Diego and Mexico, however, are still fresh on the minds of many of the surfers competing. Many are keeping a positive attitude and focusing solely on their surfing, not sharks. Dustin Cuizon who will compete on Thursday said, “I’m not too nervous about sharks. I’m just going to try the best I can tomorrow.” Also fellow Hawaiian Albee Layer, who braved the cold California waters in just board shorts, seemed unconcerned about the sharks. “They’re probably gone by now,” he said confidently after shivering his way through a win in the Round of 128.

As a CA native, lets be honest, cold winds and overcast skies is very Californian we spend the entire months of May and June under grey drizzly skies and much of the winter is the same. Not sure where you all during those times but San Diego is definitely not blue skies and sunshine year round.
