IT'S WAY OFFSHORE: Bush Calls For Offshore Drilling

Have you surfed Restaurants? Or Canoes? How about Offshore Oil Drills? President Bush asked Congress to lift the moratorium banning offshore oil drilling as part of his plan to relieve record-breaking oil prices, inspired by John McCain's initiative to include increased drilling as part of his platform for presidency.

Studies by the Rainforest Action Network suggest that offshore drilling damages kelp beds, reefs and coastal wetlands and also exposes wildlife to the threat of oil spills that could devastate their populations.

Bush says we must increase domestic oil production by tapping into the Outer Continental Shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. Colorado, Utah and Wyoming are also included with the drilling of oil shale, a type of rock that can produce oil when exposed to heat.

"Unfortunately, Democrats in Congress are standing in the way of further development," said Bush. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California points to an investigative report from the House Committee on Natural Resources, finding no correlation between increased drilling and lower gas prices.

"Bottom line," she says, "we need a real, long-term strategy to address our nation's addiction to fossil fuels. We need to reduce our energy consumption to make the shift towards renewable energy and clean technology."

Studies by the Rainforest Action Network suggest that offshore drilling damages kelp beds, reefs and coastal wetlands and also exposes wildlife to the threat of oil spills that could devastate their populations. Oil companies that have already established offshore drilling have a brutal history of accidents and violations. In May 1992, Chevron USA pleaded guilty to 65 violations of the Clean Water Act.

Governors of California, Oregon and Washington established the "West Coast Governors' Agreement on Ocean Health" in September of 2006 to enforce a lasting ban of offshore oil drilling, a commitment to alternative energy sources and increased energy efficiency. Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger, Theodore R. Kulongoski and Christine O. Gregoire sent a letter to President Bush, noting their agreement and stating, "We stand united to protect our ocean and coasts."

Gov. Schwarzenegger, who stands by his endorsement of McCain says:

"California's coastline is an international treasure. I do not support lifting this moratorium on new oil drilling off our coast."

Patagonia, a company that takes great pride in their environmentalism effort and building products without causing unnecessary harm, made the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge the focus of their Fall 2007 environmental campaign, striving to permanently protect the 1.5 million acre Coastal Plain of the Refuge by designating it as Wilderness.

Clearly, the debate is heated when it comes to finding viable solutions to our world’s need for energy, but before we dive headfirst into the water, we might want to consider its rippling effects. Tell us what you think in our comments section below.

Although I hate the thought of seeing our crowded beaches in California have the site of possible offshore Drilling, I think SOMETHING must be done to help us with Rising Oil Cost. Surely Drilling must not be the only answer. Conservation and New Innovative Technologies must be persued in order to fully get the World Industrial Machines (U.S., China, Russia, etc.)off fossil fuels and something cleaner and healthier for our planet. Also Jenna, this is NOT just president Bush's fault. President Clinton and Mr. Global Warming Al Gore did nothing during their 8 year teunure in the white house to get the U.S. Economy off foreign oil nor did they spend much resources into alternative energy. So lets not get political and tackle this issue altogether. Answer to problem: Conserve, Innovate, and "surgically" Drill where we have local oil until we find alternative forms of Energy. The world depends on it!

You are a fool Jenna. Bush has never said "democrats are responsible for increased oil costs." You're just a typical stupid liberal journalist making comments about something you know nothing about. Congratulations! You have chosen the right career!

So hang on both of you muppets actually think: (1) Its ok to drill offshore for yet more oil? (2) George Bush isn't the biggest tool every to run a country? How about, use far more effecient forms of transport, less energy in our homes and put the money for oil exploration into alternative energy resources. Using less fossil fuels isn't just an issue of cost, its just common sense and a reality, exploiting other places on this earth is not a solution. Also the price argument is so lame, how is it that Gas companies have made record profits in the trillions if the price of gas at the pump reflects only the price of crude oil? We're being taken for a ride and it's the people in power that stand to make a short term profit off the long term plundering of our planet.

Great post (Ryan). Thanks for telling it like it really is. After reading second post i nearly lost faith in humanity.

Higher gas prices are a bad thing? Maybe a little reminder that oil based fuels are not a limitless resource will help us curb our appetite for it. Soccer moms driving giant overpowered suvs, the absence of any real public transportation system in most of our metropolitain areas, giant McMansions for two yuppies and a baby, developers building without any thought of supporting infrastructure. We gluttons and it's catching up with us... environmentally and economically.

An offshore platform does not destroy reefs it creates a new reef. the sea life around a oil platform is very alive and uses the legs of the platform as shelter to breed and feed. the safety record of american ran oil companys have increased dramaticaly since 1992. oil companys do not ruin sea life but rather support it. We need to be open minded about issues such as these and look not only to the mainstream media. I am a surfer and an employee of a major oil company. and I know first hand of what I speak of. one more thing. If a platform is 50 miles or more off the coast you will never see it from the beach, except maybe on a clear night you may see a little light.

While exsisting platforms do support life and ecohsystems, creating new platforms and drilling into new wells does destroy. We need to do what ever we can as americans and surfers to save the oceans of the world. If the oceans die, we die...
