SeaSuits and Petrillo Surfboards picked up on the weird competition thing between Dru and I. So there we were on three pages of every surfing magazine, standing right next to each other for the next five years. You never see both of us smiling in the same shot.

In the mid 70's, like many of his contemporaries, Dru became fed up with the pro surfing scene. He dropped out and split to the Big Island, Hawaii. He lived in the same neighborhood with surfers from the South Bay that used to keep his board at his house on 14th Street. He got a job with airline in the freight department.

When longboards came back to the South Bay so did Dru. He flew back and forth a lot. The last time I surfed against Dru was about five years ago, in the "Legends" heat of the Aloha Contest at the Hermosa Pier. The surf was fun about three feet and Dru killed it. He was easily the best.

Last summer I wrote a story on Dru for the Easy Reader. He was helping Kip Jerger teach surfing for the Kanoa Surf School. We both let down our guard, and we got along really well. Dru Harrison was a great surfer, a helluva competitor, and a great man. I'll really miss him."--Mike Purpus

NORTH COUNTY'S FINEST: This from Surfer senior staffer Rob Gilley, "The Pacific Surf Gallery cordially invites the public to a reception for three of San Diego North County's finest surf artists : Alan Casagrande, Wade Koniakowsky and Julie Rofman. This reception will take place on Saturday night, February 22nd from 5 to 9PM, and will feature some of the latest original works from these significant talents. Alongside these paintings will be the gallery's permanent display of limited edition photographs, coffee table books, selected surf films, and unique gifts. So considering that this event also includes refreshments, there's little doubt that this evening would qualify as one not to miss.... see you there. Aloha."

OP WOMENS CLINIC: A series of 40 events covering all sorts of sports will be held throughout the year in both the US and Canada. It's called OP Girls Learn To Ride and it seems like a great way to get your wahine involved in something besides cheerleading. The first event is this Saturday, Feb 23 at Mountain High in Wrightwood.
