NAGIGIA ISLAND UPDATE: In last weeks Palooza I shared an email from a Mr. John Sullivan. Sullivan complained of a seemingly unfair policy regarding the right to surf at Nagigia Island Resort in Fiji. Harley Jones, the resort manager, wasn't very pleased. He and Sullivan exchanged a few very respectful and well-intentioned emails, and they straightened things out. For the record, Nagigia Island resort does not have a say in who does or doesn't surf the waves around their resort. The chief of the village hands down the rights. Don't blame the resort. When you, the visiting surfer, pay the chief, the money goes to the village for upgrades (hopefully he'll buy the kids some surfboards!). The resort, as far as I can tell, is a fine, upstanding destination. Check it out for yourself. The waves look fun.

SIMA HONORS HAMILTON, DEDINA, MEISTRELL BROS: I received this from Sean Smith over at SIMA, The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association "SIMA will honor Laird Hamilton, the pioneer of big-wave surfing, as its 2003 Waterman of the Year and Serge Dedina, environmental advocate and defender of Baja's pristine coast, as Environmentalist of the Year during the association's annual Waterman's Weekend environmental fundraiser, August 22-23, 2003, at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa. SIMA also will honor the Meistrell brothers for their invention and development of themodern wet suit with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Waterman's Weekend honorees were selected by the SIMA Board of Directors." There goes my New Year's resolution: no dry cleaning in 2003. For all of the dates, costs, and in-depth Waterman's Weekend info check out SIMA .

DONOVAN FINDS HIS MOJO: Bron sent information along that The Crazy Horse at the Irvine Spectrum will be premiering two, count 'em, two Billabong videos (Streamline and 3 Degrees) on March 20th. Live performance by Donovan Frankenreiter, dj Eric Cubichee.

THIS IS NOT A JOKE: From Peter Pan "The 35Th Annual New England Mid-Winter Surfing Championships took place with the water temperature an ice cold 32 degrees, and the air temperatures in the teens. But the surf was up. A solid 4-6 foot swell poured in from a strong storm system in the ocean, and there was plenty of surf to ride." In my humble opinion, whoever competed in this event is a winner; therefore I won't list the results.

I HAVE NO IDEA DEP'T: I received this email from Jamie Bjorge, and thinking it would be some well intentioned surf website, I went in to check it out. Jamie writes to me, "I just finished co-hosting a weekly beach TV show." To my astonishment this is what I found. This is why the internet is a filthy place.

ALHOA NUI: Bernie Baker sent me info regarding the Macys E-Series. Fred Patacchia Jr. won the second event of the series. Fred took home $1000. Congrats.

ALPHABET SOUP: The ISA sent along info and a copy of their February newsletter. For information on the Quiksilver World Junior Surfing Championship (QWJSC) or other ISA info such as a calendar of events dial up their website.
