PIPELINESMYBACKYARD.COM: Teaming up with the internet masters at Inexan Studios Rip Curl ripper Jamie O'Brien has launched an all new version of jamieobrien.com. A super-pro-joe Flash website, it's got a complete bio, photos, video and more. I checked the message board, and me thinks Jamie is meeting lots of wahines. Here's hoping he prioritizes things and makes the 'CT. Jamie belongs in the main event at the Pipe Masters.
RIGHT "THIS WAY" SIR: Jamie O is featured, alongside Rip Curl stalwarts Mick Fanning, Nathan Hedge, Pancho Sullivan, Pablo Gutierrez and Manoa Drollet, in the newest Rip Curl vid/dvd release titled "This Way Up." Go to the Rip Curl site to check the trailer. I just did.
BEST EVER?:Bernie Baker sent me an email with the simple subject line "Mike Stewart Bodysurf champ." Congrats Mike! I'd like to see the versatile Stewart become the World Longboard Champ, then the 'CT champ, then the sailboard champ. Is there nothing this guy can't do?
UNCLE ARTY: On June 12, 2003, legendary lensman Art Brewer will be showing his limited edition prints from the fabulous Surfers Journal book "Masters of Surf Photography: Art Brewer". If you're going to the Big Apple in June, escape the heat by diving into The Earl McGrath Gallery in New York City and checking out Art's exhibit. I'm sure the gallery is air-conditioned. By the way, Art's email said, "Earl was the past road manager for the Rolling Stones." I'm sure he was, but is there anybody in NYC's artsy world that wasn't a former Stones road manager at some time?
O'NEILL STEPS UP: From O'Neill's pr agency I got this: "O'Neill announced today the signing of a comprehensive agreement with International Management Group (IMG) to sponsor the 2003 U.S. Open of Surfing, July 28 to August 3 in Huntington Beach, Calif." Hmmm, what's the Lane like in July? Whoa-age.

IF YOU PICK IT, YOU MUST EAT IT: In late January the Volcom Team Van (V.T.V.) picked up the "Pick A Winner" Grand Prize grom, 17-year-old Virginia Beach's Jeff Hall, at LAX. Jeff's brother Nick was with him. The VTV sped off to 54th Street to meet and surf with Bruce Irons. As if hanging with Bruce Irons wasn't enough to turn their skin red, it was time to go to Volcom headquarters. The Volcom crew showered the young guys with kudos, confetti and $1000 worth of Volcom clothes. They next toured the whole facility, and stopped at the skate park to roll around and watch Bruce rip up the 6' mini ramp. Dinnertime and it was off to The Chart House. One question, why select your brother to go with you? "After giving my brother a day like this, he can't touch me anymore," explained Jeff. "Now I'll be the one handing out the beatings."
A BOXING GYM IN THE BACK: Billabong opened the "Billabong Waikiki", their first retail store in Hawaii and fourth to open in the United States. The store was blessed (who blesses retail stores anyway, Allan Greenspan?), and then the entire Hawaiian Billabong contingent, including World Champion Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, Brian Pacheco, Jason Shibata, Gavin Sutherland, Tory Barron, TJ Barron, Jamie Sterling, Daniel Jones, Ian Walsh, and Keala Kennelly, went over to Dukes to duke it out. Blackeyes for all no doubt.
