ELI WHERE ARE YOU?: Best of luck to Eli Mirandon, of the notorious Mirandon surfing family of Del Mar, who is off to West Oz to work. He recently hooked up with new sponsors Quiksilver and Etnies, along with continued support from Xanadu, Arnette and Sun Diego. Eli is attempting a full 'QS schedule along with the odd edit trip.

IT'S EROSIONAL, NOT DEPOSTIONAL: The Surfrider Foundation scored a major victory against the City of Solana Beach. The city was planning to build some fortification to fend off erosion which threatens several homeowners on the cliffs north of Pillbox. Note to self: When buying a home, recall Oceanography 101 basics. West coast erosional, East coast depositional.

Now, I want to know where our beloved Surfrider stands on the Del Mar Rivermouth / Estuary issue. Note to Surfrider Foundation: Permanent rivermouth good. No rivermouth bad.

DON'T SAY THAT: Mention the word "slip" in Mission Beach and immediately people start recalling lusty nights at Moondoggies. But in this case, we are talking about boat slips. As in a parking spot for the newest member of Baykeeper/Surfrider SD chapter, the "Malama Kai" - a BOAT! Hal Baker and Roberta Jorgensen of Newport Beach generously donated the 1974 Trojan Sea Cruiser to them last fall. No parking spot has been found yet. Call Surfrider with info.

YUCK, WHO PERFORATED? Billygoat Distribution Inc., just secured an exclusive distribution deal for the newly created Robb Havassy 2004 "Surf Odyssey" Calendar with a street date planned for September 2003. This unique and beautiful calendar will include tide charts for the East Coast, West Coast and Hawaii as well as high quality perforated pages for easy removal and framing of your favorite surf print(s). Surfrider Foundation and Ocean Pacific ("OP") have signed on as official sponsors of the 2004 "Surf Odyssey" Calendar.

MORE DIVISIONS: The Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) recently relaunched its website, SurfESA.org. Redesigned by the Florida-based & award winning digital media studio, Sharkinetics, the site now boasts a striking, more coherent design, a more efficient & user-friendly navigation, and optimized images & content for faster downloading. Check it yourself.

WHEN SURFERS BECOME ROCK STARS: The WCT will be stopping at Niijima Island, 200km off the coast of Tokyo, for the Niijima Quiksilver Pro which commences on June 18. Said contest director Rod Brooks, "The location is famous for it's clear water and pure sands." Uh. Hmmm. Here's hoping the boys get some waves.

IT IS FRIGGIN' ON!: The 8 best surfers from San Dieguito High School and La Jolla High School surf teams will face off against each other Saturday, April 5, 2003 in Pacific Beach using a new team style format. This will be the first time high school teams will use "The Game" format. What is the game? Well it's a new format. The best thing about the game is that only last 2-3 hour. No more all day hell missions watching 2' blown out Law St.

Saturday, April 5 Schedule:

  • 9:00AM Event Begins
  • 9:15AM Team Intros
  • 9:30AM Game Start Depending on Wave Conditions Game will end between 12:00-12:30 PM
