Billabong, Rip Curl, Quiksilver, they all have fat (comparatively) budgets for videos. Plus, unlike the independent folks, these industry heavy hitters have the talent pool heated and primed for a dip into digital history. In comparison, the hustling indy guy struggles to keep up with the talent. Sessions that go down with Slater, Machado and Irons are prime and crucial for marketing the product. The independent video producer relies on rumors and industry bathroom hearsay to track down the high action, high talent surf sessions.

The bottom line: The independent guys scrape by on pure stoke and sometimes their parents frequent-flier miles. Surf-A-Palooza is lobbying with the powers that be here at SURFER to include a special award at this year's upcoming Surfer Poll and Video Awards. It's time to step up and honor those who wreck their backs in boats, ruin their eyes in front of monitors, and destroy their TRW report with ridiculous traveling expenses. It's time to honor the independent surf video producer.

WACKY OVER WACKO: REEF has tabbed Wacko-Arnor of Taiwan to be their distributor announces Wacko-Arnor as the Taiwanese Distributor. Established in 1989 and based in Taipei, Taiwan Arnor will begin distributing Reef in May 2003. Go to REEF.com or call + 1 858 514 3600

GOT ANY GOOD STORIES TO WEAR?: This came via the ad guys "Blue Link is an authentic surf brand based on historic surf spots, and the legends that have impacted the American consciousness. Apparently they good folks at Blue Link (Michael Cassel, Rene Acuña) are looking to emblazon surf lore on their product. And they want your surf lore! If you have a good surf story that took place between 1940 and 1975 please send it to: chad@saucedesign.com or snail mail to 9 Wavecrest Ave. Venice, CA 90291. I wonder what the "my-first-head-dip-at-Pillbox" trunks will look like?

TOUGH DAY ON THE JOB: My good buddy Soupman sent me this Honolulu Advertiser story about a Whale Expert who was speared by a marlin while filming False Killer Whales off of Maui. "...the marlin was being attacked and it was going at whoever was there. Mark just happened to be in the wrong place."

OZ FEST ON DVS: Jack Osbourne is this month's audio interview at www.dvsshoes.com/surf Tim Gavin and Brandy Faber chat it up with Jack about his crush on Tim, surfing, falling off of piers and life after "The Osbourne's."

GLOBAL ANNOUNCES ADVERBS: Globe is producing its first ever surf team video, titled Somewhere Anywhere Everywhere. The flick is an introspective look into the lives of Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood, Mark Occhilupo, Damien Hobgood, Luke Hitchings, Nathan Webster and Pancho Sullivan. Look for it in the fall. Speaking of Pancho, Globe is telling us that Panch scored heavily at many North Shore spots toward the end of the Hawaiian winter.

THAT WOULD BE A TOUGH HEAT: It's hard enough to beat Jeff Deffenbaugh at HB Pier, just imagine if he owned the contest you were in too. That's a combo score nobody could overcome. Seth Matson recently announced the sale of his HB Surf Series to Deffenbaugh. Jeff stopped by the office recently and is amped about the upcoming HBSS events. He's starting off with a few amateur events to iron out the wrinkles, and then plans on rolling out a full pro event schedule.
