According to a report recently published on SeaShepherd.com, Paul Watson, captain of the anti-whaling boat, Steve Irwin, was shot in the chest today while confronting the Japanese whaling vessel, Nisshin Maru, within the waters of the Australian Territorial Zone near Antarctica. Watson was wearing a Kevlar vest at the time of the shooting, a move that effectively stopped the bullet and saved his life. The shot was fired by a presently unknown gunman as Japanese Coast Guard members hurled flash bang grenades onto the deck of Steve Irwin. The doctor on board applied immediate medical attention to Watson and has been emphatic in saying that had Watson not been wearing a Kevlar vest, the bullet could have caused fatal damage.

Tensions between the Steve Irwin, and Nisshin Maru, have been escalating during the course of the past week. Recently, crewmembers from the Steve Irwin threw rotten butter aboard the Nisshin Maru, causing a horrible smell. Watson and his group of anti-whalers are accustomed to using an array of unusual tactics to stop illegal whaling.

Watson’s proactive attitude and approach to ending illegal whaling has been outlined on the Sea Shepherd website:

“I did not establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a protest organization,” said Captain Watson. “I have not gone to sea over all these years to simply bear witness to the atrocities that whalers continue to inflict upon the most gentle and intelligent beings in the seas. We are sea cops—operating legally under the guidelines of the United Nation's World Charter for Nature, which allow for the enforcement of international conservation law by non-governmental organizations in international jurisdictions.” Despite the history of confrontation between the two parties, the news of Watson being shot came as a shock to many.

The past autumn, eco-activist Dave Rastovich joined Sea Shepherd and Paul Watson in an effort to raise awareness of illegal whale slaughter. Rastovich has been an outspoken supporter of Paul Watson and Sea Shepherd during the course of the last year.

This is BS, you should publish news fairly. For this certain case, the Japanese ship shot back due to self defence. Even IMF supports this. Though I am against whale hunting, media should not only take one side of the story.

Tomo: What is there to defend? The Protectors of sea-life threw butter, while the whale-killers shot bullets at unarmed people. The oceans are being fished out by greedy people who could find other careers. The person who fired the shot should be arrested for attempted murder. It is time to start drawing lines that give the ocean a chance to replenish. One of those lines is to protect whales... But there should be many many more. I support local fisherman... But these large commercial enterprises are bad news, and they are not going to regulate themselves. We are intelligent, and we should use our intelligence to protect the balance of life in our world, a world that includes many species of flora and fauna.

Hi being a meat eater myself. i find the tactics of the Sea Shepherd's,right on.In my humble opinion,They are doing a great service for those wonderful mammels we call whales. And the other people out thier who support theses Green Pirates.with an old Navy compliment BRAVO ZULU.So to all my fellow pirates out thier keep up the good work, and keep the japanese away from our huge and magnificent friends the whales.Oh yeah a parting word if we don;t stop the whaling we will be destroying our children's future.Thank's ST4.

It amazes me that Paul Watson and others risk their lives defending animals; while few people risk their lives to save human beings from slaughter around the globe. Endangered animals must be saved, but I think our first priority is to protect and defend man from man, long before we risk our lives for animals.

The whole thing was faked. To get the real story about what went on, on the sea, about the Sea Shepard and Whale Wars, the stupidity and ineptness of the SS crew and captain, I invite you to view the Animal Planet website, click on Whale Wars and last but not least see the terrorist actions and acts of piracy that these guys commit under the guise of conservation. Check out any of the forums and see for yourself. There are plenty of links along the way to support the stories about the crimes that the captain [Watson] and his crew have committed. THEN, come back here and report. Yeah, I like whales too, and support their conservation, BUT NOT like the crew of this boat. Come on people, get in line to comment on this disaster of a show.

The captain is an ego maniac. He is a fool if he expects an intelligent human being to accept his fake "I've been shot" act.

Paul Watson is totally lying. First of all, I sell body armor to police and if you were shot you would damn well know it immediately but in the series he says he was casually that he was shot. Soft body armor does stop bullets but not without heavy bruising and in many instances cracked ribs. Paul Watson if full of crap and is just trying to get sympathy from the media. The whole series is about him trying to provoke the Japs and then blowing any reaction he can get out of proportion. This is kind of like picking a fight and then when you are punched you cry to the authorities and say the other guy started it. It seems quite cowardly to me. He has lost all credibility with many people I think.

What Bull! This was staged!I can guarentee that if he was hit by a bullit either fired from a hand gun or high powered rifle, He would be hurting badly! I know by personal experience. I was bruised for 2 weeks and could barely breath without pain. And I was hit by a 9mm! Give me a break! You may bs some of the people most of the time , but never all of the people! I heard that Greenpeace kicked him out of their terrorist organization for being too radical. Perhaps he is a loose cannon that needs to feel the long arm of the law.

Sun Feb 8, 2009, 1:13 AM

The shot in question was a low powered handgun round probably a 38 special or 9mm.Any other round fired through a rifle would have penetrated the vest. This is not a likely senario as handguns are inaccurate at the range paul was shot at. the shooting was a hoax until proven otherwise the japaneese wouls not jeprodize there legal rights to kill that dumb ass.

for one I do believe the report. secondly you dont have to be deadly accurate to get lucky. so yes for the most part a 45 or 40 or 9 mm will do a good deal of bruising when a shot is taken in the chest. the other factor that some of you seem to forget is that they are in antarctica and he was wearing a substantial amount of clothing and that he had a pretty good sized badge under the vest and dont forget his heavy coat. so lets put it all together. theoretical distance from shooter to captain. between 40-50 yards possibly more. 3 layers of clothing , one kevlar vest. a large brass badge. and a round that by the look of it was a eather a 380cal or 9mm. is it likely that that round would break ribs in this instance... no. what japan is doing is outrageous and must be stopped. there are about 50000 minke whales left in the world and japan wants to shoot 1000 per year. you do the math. there will all be gone in our lifetime. thats why there is a whaling ban. japan doesnt give a damn like some of you but I do

well lets see a mustang suit is made of a small insulating layer with foam underneath it to provide flotation. a bullet would cut through it with minimal resistance. his "bullet proof vest" is only rated for pistol rounds. that dinky little tin badge would in no way stop a bullet(if you don't believe me check out Myth Busters sometime. they actually tested it.) now on to the shot. the distance of the shot was greater than 50 yards so any marksman with half a brain would know that a rifle is the only choice considering this and the environment in which the shot was taken. a pistol would have taken multiple shots. both vessels were traveling at an average of 17 knots in rough seas. that shot is next to impossible because when you factor in the fact that he wasn't standing still and that the shooter had be in a position that hid his muzzle flash from the entire crew which would have limited his view of the target. a rifle round would have killed him and a miraculous pistol round would have bu

I say arm the Ship!!! Alright the idea behind the sea Sheppards is to stop whaling right? So find a more guaranteed way of stopping it. I'm not saying put torpedo launchers on the bow but arm the ship with devices that will truly stop all whaling activity, Sonic systems, devices to fire line into rudders and props. Basically anything that will damage and make inoperable the ship and or equipment needed to go about the business of whaling. I do not think the direct injuring of whaling personnel will do anything to stop the whaling but as with most things hurt their bottom line and it will stop. And at over 100,000 dollars to replace a bent or broken prop, not to mention the cost of towing a vessel the size of the Nishan Maru, damaging and incapacitating a ship like this will cost far more than the amount of money it could bring in on a whaling deployment. Call me crazy but I have always felt that the most defenseless of our world all need our strongest defenses.

So with Jasons logic, if the most defenseless among us need strict protective laws, then an international abortion ban would be appropriate, that way we can protect the most defenseless human beings, right? Maybe we just need another plague that way we can just cut the earths population in half there by giving the earth time to reset and replenish. Any whiners who want to volunteer, just post ur address and i will send you 20 feet of rope so you can HANG YOURSELF! Thats right folks suicide for green causes! Oh, and lastly how many people have been killed in the SS sinkings, I mean do you really think that fat suck-hole of a captain has not killed anyone? I just wish I was the shooter!

WOW, some of you people are truly idiots!! Man can protect himself, animals can't protect themselves from highpowered guns and harpoon weapons!!!!! Our Earth's eco-system needs animals more than it needs idiotic people. I applaud Captain Watson and his crew for putting their lives on the line, and I only wish we had more like him out there fighting the good fight! People that kill whales, dolphins, bears, sea turtles, seals, walruses, elephants, lions, and other wildlife deserve to have honey poured on them and tied to a giant ant pile and eaten alive!! I have no care or concern for poachers or people that think nothing of killing our Earth's wildlife!! May you bush meat eaters get a severe case of bloody diarrhea, and may it last for the rest of your life!!

OK....ummm....you guys do know that it was proven almost a year ago that Paul Watson staged the entire "shot in the chest thing". It was a fake. After he was exposed, he won't even talk about it. This guy is not above lieing to get his way. He makes up facts....he is pretty much a joke. His organization wastes their supporters money on acts that only turn against people against organizations, like Green Peace, who actually have done something to stop whaling.

I don't know about the shooting, but the brutal killing of whales couldn't have been staged. It was absolutely heart breaking. Looked like real whale killing to me.

The shot in the chest was as fake as fake can be. Everything PW does is to get publicity. He gets publicity and he gets donations and he spends it on whatever he so desires. He is a wealthy man thanks to SS and now Whale Wars and he is not a vegan. Anyone thinking he is a vegan think again. He has investments and property and he will live a life of luxuary when the whale fighting becomes a little boring, already he looks like hes slowing down. He likes Hollywood stars, he like mingling with the stars, he like being noticed, he likes being a 'hero' to a young and impressive audience, he is self centered and self absorbed. He is out for number one and the whales.. well they fund his lavish lifestyle. Combine all that with a knack for deceiving people and you have an egomaniac, a man whose heart is not in saving whales but he likes the money its generating, he is not a vegan but then again he has never said he is, he is not even a vegetarian so we here tel. Its a

They did what none of us had the guts to do. Preserving what is left for all our future generations. Quit being shallow and argue on small things like plot and drama. The fact is still the same. Our oceans are over-fished. Tuna and Sailfish sizes have shrunk worldwide and non-sustainable methods will eventually cause large skill extinction of many food fish. So yes, Sea Shepherds could have done things differently but the fact is they did do things. Have you done your part lately?

I like whales. I support their conservation. However, this article is about Paul Watson allegedly "getting shot". If you look at the evidence in the aftermath of this supposed incident, it's pretty clear that he WAS NOT SHOT. No matter how justified they believe their actions to be, establishing themselves as compulsive LIARS at every opportunity will eventually hurt the anti-whaling cause and make it impossible for anyone in their right mind to support them. It's not "shallow" to argue over this "small" point - accusing someone of attempted murder is uh, kind of a big deal.
