Before the Billabong Pro Tahiti started this past May, Orange County’s Cameron Knight was going through his usual routine of picking his Fantasy Surfer team. On a whim he decided to enter the Billabong Skybox. By the end of the contest he was sitting in first place in the skybox, and as a result, walked away with one of Andy Irons’ surfboards. We caught up with Cameron shortly after he’d picked up the board to get his thoughts on winning at Fantasy Surfer.
How long have you been into Fantasy Surfer, and what got you involved in the first place?
I’ve been playing for two years. My friends told me about it, and since I’ve always watched the World Tour closely, and I’m competitive, I signed up.
Do you have any secrets to picking a team that you'd be willing to share?
Just the obvious, pay attention to the heat draw and look at last year’s event results
What about dependable dark horse type guys, are there any that you always look at?
Yeah, Tim Reyes, Kai Otten, Ace Buchan
When it comes to juggling 8 surfers of differing value, what strategies do you have for managing your salary cap?
I usually keep the same top three guys all year, and then pick the rest of my team depending on the heat draws, and wave. Its always a good idea to have a lot of medium seeds because they don’t have to surf against any top seeds till later in the event
Who are some surfers you're keeping an eye on going into J-Bay?
Slater, Parko, Reynolds, Reyes
For somebody playing Fantasy Surfer for the first time, what would be your biggest recommendation?
Always have 8 guys on your team!
Finally, you won an Andy Irons board in the Billabong skybox, are you going to go shred on it the next south swell?
Nope, I’m gonna hang it above my office desk.

That a girl, lets see everyone talk crap about her now. Coco did the right thing there, and will be a great representitive for womens surfing. Go COCO!
Tue Nov25, 2008, 5:49 PM
hope mason and mike dont let the asp turn her into a robot. this is so fabricated for the public it's a joke. wish you could get the real truth out but that isn't acceptable in our society. pisses too many whiners off. sounds like a politician wrote this or hollywood p.r. agent. coco is just a kid and a good kid at that. i hope she makes more mistakes on her way to giving carissa a challenge for the title in the future. hopefully bringing some excitement to womens surfing in the process. that air was sick!!
Tue Nov25, 2008, 5:52 PM
Whitewash! She should have been fined!
Tue Nov25, 2008, 6:23 PM
SERIOUSLY??? There's no way on earth she wrote that garbage. I don't personally care either way on the matter, But Spez is right, that crap is not her writing...
Tue Nov25, 2008, 8:45 PM
I call BS!!! Let her get fined for unsportsmanlike conduct. Welcome to the big leagues.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 5:59 PM
RC shut up ya old hag and get with the program, layne's to old for this crap and coco, carissa and laura all are better than her.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 6:04 PM
why do we care...if kelly slater dropped in on damien hardman, the world celebrates, how is this any different? you have someone young that rips and an old timer...enough with this sport being politically correct
Tue Nov25, 2008, 6:09 PM
Drop it people. what she did is all part of competition, she didnt do anything wrong. Layne needs to be a better loser and not make a big deal out of standard practice in most sports.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 6:14 PM
All this proves is that Coco's PR team can write a good press release.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 7:24 PM
Layne is a legend no doubt but Carissa easily won that final even if Layne had that last wave. With all respect to what Layne has done, Carissa's surfing is so far beyond what Layne can do that Layne should be gracious. There is a new generation, Coco and Carissa being the leaders, that is taking women's surfing to the next level...it reminds of Kelly Slater's first days as a pro. Elko was constantly pouring the hatorade about Kelly but was clearly evident by all observers was that Kelly was doing things on waves that Elko could only dream of. This is happening now...just in the women's leagues. Has any women surfer done what Coco and Carissa are doing and conquering? I understand Layne's point but the torch has been passed and it is something that no one can deny.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 8:56 PM
Pro surfers always disrespectfully drop in. What do you expect?
Tue Nov25, 2008, 10:03 PM
That apology meant nuthin. The hawaains are a bunch of tossers, even if they are only 17 chicks. The asp should have done something. Its not like things like these are not gonna happen again. Her and Carissa would have been stoked that she dropped in.
Tue Nov25, 2008, 10:48 PM
Doesnt anyone realize that this was a WQS event? who careeesss?!?!?!!?!?!?
Wed Nov26, 2008, 12:36 AM
Layne has been gracious and hasn't made a big deal, or even a small deal. All the investigations have been on behalf of the ASP and not Layne. Understand that at least. "I am stoked that the ASP did not just go by the rumors and the press, but worked with me and my coach and my family to make sure I got to apologize and use this as a learning tool." - Sounds like nepotism to me. One of many factors that contribute to the surf industry preventing its commodity from becoming a 'real sport.'
Wed Nov26, 2008, 12:52 AM
And we are to believe that Coco wrote that apology? ha! The PR rep could have drafted something more genuine...
Wed Nov26, 2008, 1:19 AM
geez.... this is garbage...coco dropped in on layne because her dad, uncle, brother, and greater hawaii surf community in general have so much ignorant delusion of graundure over the rest of the surf world. Its Hawaii surf culture to feel the right to crap on non hawaiians surf experience. Even if your the greatest surfer of all time. Cheers to the REAL ambasadors of aloha out there.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 2:01 AM
Hey - great publicity stunt Coco!!! More press = more money via photo incentive. The real question is: did Carissa split the 1st place prize with you too??? Now that would have made it worth it... As they say in Hollywood, "bad press is better than no press". People will forget about this incident by Monday. What many readers forget is that this was done in a competition, so respect gets thrown out the window. Anyone remember when Slater robbed Beschen out of the U.S. Open title in Huntington about 10 years ago? Slater was out there to win, not give respect...same thing happened here
Wed Nov26, 2008, 3:39 AM
her apology sounded way scripted and hardly sencere. whatever, it is in the past and only she knows her motive. but i find it hard to believe she was just "making a spontaneous move". i may be wrong. i hope i am. nice air, lame move. just wait till coco is older and the groms pull crap like that on her. she might be bummed too. it happens to everyone eventually. dropping in, is dropping in. when it is the last few minutes of a final and the girl you snake has a chance to win...that is plain rude and unprofessional
Wed Nov26, 2008, 8:31 AM
The is no way coco wrote that/wrote that herself. The poor handleing of this incedent shows that the ASP has zero control or authority over the surfers. Pathetic and a joke in my opinion.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 8:34 AM
Rabbit, you're too nice letting her off the hook like that and having your best english major write that for her. This is the bad influence of the crew she surfs with obviously. But it doesn't do any good embarrasing her more either, she's just a kid. I hope everyone else got to see that and learns from this stupid move. Don't disrespect a world champ.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 10:06 AM
Amazing amount of dizzing going on here. If all you can do is tear down Layne to build Coco up your a sad sack. Layne is a great surfer and Coco is on her way to becoming great. Layne has always shown poise and grace. Can anybody learn a few lessons from her on the way up?? Let's hope so.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 10:54 AM
She did not break any rules and should not be penalized. If it was inadvertent, better for her. If it was to block for Coco, I would have done the same thing. For those of you who think Layne should have been entitled to that wave you're on the 'spread the wealth' bandwagon.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 11:25 AM
Coco is great kid & would never to do anything with bad intensions. If she got a 7 point ride on that wave she was on the WCT next year at the age 17.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 12:45 PM
Out with old.... in with the new!
Wed Nov26, 2008, 6:28 PM
db, you should have said if Layne didn't catch the wave first, and Coco didn't ignore that obvious fact and drop in, then got a 7, she may have qualified for the ASP at the age of 17.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 6:35 PM
there's no way she could come up with an apology like that, what is she, a politician? Garbage is right, stinky wet BS! oh yeah, just because its out with the old in with the new doesn't mean the fair rules of competition should be broken, retards
Wed Nov26, 2008, 6:39 PM
The asp has no control. Firstly they can't stand up to hawaii and have competitions the way they are everywhere else. Further laying down they can't control what the hawaiians want to do in these overpopulated heats. Don't happen all the time but often enough to do something.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 9:52 PM
Funny (and predictable) how everyone is focused on this when the REAL backbone of the surf industry (retail shopping) is circling the drain.
Wed Nov26, 2008, 10:29 PM
Dear Layne: I have a few questions you might want to reflect on: Is Joel Parkinson one of your "counterparts"? Was this incident different from his intentional drop in on Kelly Slater at the Pipe masters a few years ago? Layne, are you saying you have never intentionally dropped in or have been perceived as cheating in any way in your career? (The Walkie-Talkie incident comes to mind here.) You seem to be unfairly bunching other young athlete's into a similar category of being overly competitive desperate athletes. Your use of the word desperate is judgmental and unfairly includes Laura Enever. Is this what you are trying to insinuate? As for "high fives" after the win. Is it possible that two friends were happy for each other's accomplishments instead of maliciously celebrating their disrespect? If you truly believe in inspiring the future, you might want to rethink your strategy on going after one of the surfing world's brightest young stars. Layne, I wis

let it go people.
Thu Nov27, 2008, 7:30 PM
Coco smokes layne. Shes to old, and she is one rotten apple. So let it go, plain and simple coco is better than layne and layne is a hag
Thu Nov27, 2008, 12:34 PM
Remember Vetea David's drop in on Elkerton during the 1993 Pipe Master. Vetea did that to help Derek Ho to win world title. A shame and an Ho's Family speciality...
Thu Nov27, 2008, 2:09 PM
Breaking News: Pro surfing is lame. Here they set a bad example by not assessing a fine for behavior that is simply unacceptable in any lineup. Peter's right- retail shopping is getting hit, and so too will the "sport" of surfing, thankfully. I'm tired of companies that make products that have nothing to do with surfing (e.g. shoes) paying "athletes" (i.e. shining examples of arrested development) to travel around the world and drop in on the very constituents they are targeting. This industry, and most of the broader surfing community is missing the real issue: we are arguing about some silly contest when oceans and surf spots are being destroyed by human activity. VERY few of these surfing icons are doing squat about cleaning up the industry, which has a horrible environmental and human rights record- let alone taking a proactive position on marine conservation. One exception: Patagonia. And while the Malloy brothers are kind of punks, I give them credit for taking a stand and l

Some wise advise from many years ago says we are to be "forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead," Philippians 3:13. I believe Coco is genuinely sorry for what happened, has fessed up and now it's time to press on. She has many years of great surfing ahead of her and this should not be some dark smear on her career.
Fri Nov28, 2008, 5:48 AM
Who care's! Surfing is the greatest thing in life. But if you are going to do it as a professional sport, rather that a spiritual experience, then it's a differenr 'game'. Pick your sport. Talk about 'sportsmenship'and respect. Then take a good look at any other professional sport. Hockey: cheap shots and fights, Baseball: tanted balls and bats, steroids. Football: cheap shots, punches, grabs. Basketball: elbows. That's sports! The thought that all is 'fair'is extremly ignorant. Stop crying and complaining. And please stop with the ridiculous press releases.
Fri Nov28, 2008, 8:38 PM
THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT SHE DROPPED IN DELIBERATELY. ANYBODY WHO SAYS DIFFERENT IS A F_(*^)* IDIOT!!! That being said was it wrong? It was a tactic. It is stupid that Coco says she was trying to score a 7 to get on the CT? You can't do that snaking!!! Duh!!! Anyhow, that being said, I have seen these tactics for the last 30 years. Layne was screwed before that heat even started. I don't have any animosity towards Coco. She helped her friend out. Hellen Keller and Stevie Wonder could have seen that. It was just a bummer that it was Layne but "OH WELL, THAT'S THE WAY IT GOES. LAYNE ADMITTED HERSELF." Those Brazilians like to pull that crap too.
Fri Nov28, 2008, 11:14 PM
Clearly, this statement was written by someone other than Coco Ho. Would anyone expect otherwise? She's only 17, after all. What's really annoying, however, is the insincerity of the entire incident. I watched the clip of the wave in question - this girl had NO chance to win the heat. It was no mistake - she knew what she was doing. I don't gauge intent - I gauge action. If Coco Ho and Carissa Moore rip and want to win contests (and they are both more than capable of doing so), let them do it the right way. It is true that this Hawaiian "thuggery", if you will, dominates the contest scene on the rock. I get the whole "the Islands were stolen" from the locals trip - but if the Hawaiians want to get the respect they deserve in contests and in the lineups, let their actions do the talking. There's no doubt many Hawaiian surfers rip and are deserving of mad respect...but let's also not forget that respect is something one must earn. Those who want to be the best

So we whine. And on it goes. It sounds fabricated? What would you rather have, a professional surfer sounding completely inarticulate? But it would sound more sincere, you say? I'm sorry, but half of you who respond to these forums couldn't write or even say something like that. You'd babble on with your, wow, I surfed 3 foot pipes yesterdays and ate a sick breakfast after...type jargon. Even if it was fabricated, it was well said, to the point and something young surfers can learn from.
