KELLY SLATER TEAMS UP WITH SEA SHEPHERD

World Champ Joins Forces With Pirates At Quiksilver Pro

Bookmark and Share

This year’s Australian Quiksilver Pro witnessed a remarkable moment in surfing history when nine-time ASP champion Kelly Slater joined lifelong eco-crusader, Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, to announce the recent launch of a Quiksilver Australia/Sea Shepherd partnership.

The deal includes a customized Quiksilver sponsored Sea Shepherd clothing line featuring a signature Kelly Slater board short. For every retail item sold, the industry giant will donate $5 to help support the efforts of the self-proclaimed, “Neptune’s Navy.”

Established in 1977, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Best known for their innovative direct-action tactics, Sea Shepherd investigates, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.

The endorsement by Slater of the often controversial activist group is a symbol of solidarity that sends a clear message to the global community that pro-surfers are becoming serious about taking direct action to protect the very arena in which they work and play.

“The time and commitment they've all put forth have put a huge dent into things we'd like to see not exist.” —Kelly Slater

Local surfing film legend Dick Hoole commented, “Through the path of surfing, our generation has become more aware that the marine environment is something that we need to protect. Here in Australia, we went from killing whales to saving whales. After all, surfing teaches respect for nature.”

“Kelly Slater understands that connection,” added Watson. “He has said that the ocean has spoken to him as it has spoken to me and many others. He understands what it means to be a moanahepara—a shepherd of the sea.”

The eradication of pirate whaling, poaching, shark finning, unlawful habitat destruction, and violations of established laws in the world's oceans all fall under the Sea Shepherd’s rigorous mandate. The oceans are in grave danger and time has never been more critical for surfers to join forces with pioneers Kelly Slater and Quicksilver in supporting Captain Paul Watson and The Sea Shepherd’s efforts to protect the homeland.

“It doesn’t take a lot of people to make a change, but one intelligent person can make a difference,” added Hoole. “Kelly Slater’s thinking shows that not only is he a great surfer and athlete, but his consciousness is way ahead of people his age.”

That is so so awesome. I totally believe in Sea Shepherd. I have yet to support them financially and right now give to WWF. Birthday money is rolling in so I will have to make a donation to help the worthy cause at Sea Shepherd. I grew up in Mililani Hawaii and lived on the North Shore for a couple of years on Ke Iki Road right after high school. I spent more time at the North Shore than I did in school! I have always respected the ocean and all that live in it. It's so inspiring to see Kelly Slater support Sea Shepherd. So awesome! I hope this inspires others to do the same. Maluhia, Gina

This is a big, smart step forward for the Surf industry. Kelly cannot be praised enough for stepping forward, and the same goes for Quiksilver supporting his interest. My only suggestion is Sea Shepherd's branding needs serious reworking. The black pirate ship motif makes it incredibly easy for the mainstream press to attack it. If Paul Watson wants to help save the ocean, he needs to put his own "pirate" trip aside and put forward a positive image that the world's public can buy into. More like all white ship / Red Cross imagery. Why not Bright Green with a white Whale, or something? I am a surf industry design professional (even helped promote Kelly early on), and you can send him my e-mail and I will design it for free—or get the guys at Quiksilver to do it. But the skull and crossbones is totally counterproductive; especially with pirates increasingly causing dangerous problems.

Sea Shepherd are without doubt the only organization that currently has an impact on whaling, shark finning etc (I recommend watching "sharkwater" !) But the Quiksilver/Kelly shorts cost 99 Australian dollars and just $5 are donated to Sea Shepherd??? Seems to be more of a marketing campaign for Quik! Make it $40 or $50 and I'm convinced.

I hope that we're not to late. Man's greed has more far reaching consequences than we really know. Kelly, you'd be a great ambassador for the cause. The ocean has given me countless hours of enjoyment. I would hate to see it destroyed. Keep up the fight. Fight corporate America and the greed machine, support your local mom and pop businesses.

This is stupid. It is only a matter of time before Watson kills one of his crew. I have seen his show on tv and I do not think it helped his cause. There are more deserving people out there. Greenpeace kicked him out. Why should surfers support him.

Sea Shepherd is a joke. Some of the most irresponsible seaman, I use the term loosely, I've ever seen. A boat manned by a bunch of kook hippies captained by an out of touch moron. They are a danger to themselves and others. Their days are numbered operating as they do.

Watson is a hardcore who regularly endangers the lives of people who make their living on the sea. I don't disagree with his mission, but I do disagree with his methods. The owners of ships who engage in trade we find distasteful should be targeted, not the working people who man those ships. Watson is a menace and its a shame these rich pro surfers can't see that.

Thu Mar19, 2009, 11:44 PM

so are Rasta and Slater really the only ones working to protect the ocean? more often than not surfers are an apathetic and apolitical bunch that don't do nearly enough to protect their interests. supporting these organizations is a great first step, but change has to happen on a personal level to make any real impact. how about reducing your consumption of fish or eating food that doesn't kill the soil, rivers, and then oceans with its chemicals? individual sacrifices must be made. change won't come by just throwing money at NPOs.....the ocean is dying and people need to stop exploiting and polluting it to support their own desires.

Dolphins surf the way the likes of Kelly can only dream of. They are our surfing brotherhood! The annual slaughter of these beautiful creatures in Taji Japan can only be likened to the genocide of innocents witnessed under the Nazi regime. All power to Paul Watson, Kelly, Rasta, Seashepherd and Quiksilver! Checkout the www.thecovemovie.com or www.surfersforcetaceans.com for more info. As surfers its our karmic duty to protect the oceans inhabitants!

thats great kelly is stepping forward to do something for the environment. I would say he has made a good living from it. But whats to say about the whole surf industry's exploitation of chinese labor? Save the humans. All this so called environmentalism from these surf companies is pure bullshit. They donate a tiny fraction of the money and then advertise the hell out of it. This is so embarrassing. What about the landfill of disposable, cheap, chinese made, clothes they produce? We need to stop the people and corporations that blatantly perpetuate the environmental looting of this planet and obfuscate their actions with cute commercials and denigrating the actions of people bold enough to do something about it. These modern day robber barons are the pirates and will not be stopped by conventional laws and actions. Sea Shepard is calling attention to them and needs our support as this seems to be the only way to effectively garner the necesary attention and support from us. Do not demonize Paul Watsons' taking on the perpetrators of these destructive acts. You play right into the hands of the villians. Perhaps if there was more participation of concerned people then there would be less need for extreme measures, but, as of now, Sea Shepard and Paul Watson are few and lonely and are to be commended for standing up to the corporations and people who have no respect for the animals and ocean environs.

This is a fantastic thing and I want to praise Kelly Slater and Quicksilver for doing this. The more attention and money that can be raised for Sea Shepherd and the causes they fight for, the better. To those who think they're dangerous and reckless, I ask you this; how is a group who have never seriously hurt, much less killed anyone be so reckless? They have a steller record. Much safer than the record of the whalers who can not come close to claim they've never lost a crew member. And their safety record isn't even counting the thousands of whales they have slaughtered. Killing endangered and threatened species is wrong. If you don't understand that, your ignorance is so dense no one will ever be able to break through it. I only hope that enough of those who do understand take action to counter the ignorance of you all. This truly is a life and death issue. Not only for the people and animals directly involved, but for every living being on this planet. The ocean ecosystem collap

Well done Kelly for your personal support. 8/10 Quiksilver you get 3/10. The perception is that you are making a profit from your association with Sea Shepherd. I refer to the earlier post by Joe re the poultry $5 from each sale going to Sea Shepherd. I thinks you could come up with a better offer than that. If you are donating more cash through your foundation then lets HEAR about it. Last year Quiksilver were selling actual Sea Shepherd T - shirts in their Manly (Australia) store for $40, again $5 only was passed on. LAME. I bought my T online, direct from www.seashepherd.org - ALL the money goes to them. So here's my point, KELLY why not use your industry muscle and produce boardies / clothing direct for Sea Shepherd. Re the guy who wants to loose the pirate logo, Greenpeace already does the 'soft' thing. Don't get me wrong, I believe we need both organisations fighting the good fight, as they appeal to different people around the world.

Kelly's overall support, including product endorsement, is invaluable regardless of the percentage deal that was worked out between Sea Shepherd and Quicksilver. It takes brave, compassionate, and intelligent individuals like Slater and Rasta to openly demonstrate their solidarity with TRUE Ocean defenders like Paul Watson and The Sea Shepherd Conversation Society. They are paving the way for fellow surfers who have the capability to reach a larger audience to USE their voice (and sponsorships) for something that really matters. Furthermore, they serve as role models for the younger generation of surfers and anyone who has ever felt the spirit of the Ocean to stand up and take action against the devastating atrocities plaguing our beloved Mother. My only question is: who is next?

I agree with you Deborah. Way to go Kelly for the support. As far as others comments. The Sea Shepherd has been active for thirty years and is supported by the Dalai Lama, The five Nations Iroquios Confederacy and the Ecuador government as well as many others. It is not just a band of hippy activists. The shepherd of the sea logo is great. Don't change a thing. I have recently added my monthly support. Try to give even five or ten dollars a month. Every bit helps.

Are we kidding? My 2 year old watched people throwing acid on people doing there job! This is madness all the problems we face and this is good news. Has any body thought of the tons of fossil fuels used by that ship? The fact that the seamanship is horrible and has almost killed crew for no purpose. Leave the Japanese alone they were doing this long before we stuck are noses in. Let alone good Ol'Americans history with whaling. How soon we forget. I hope someone has enough since to end this before people get killed either out of stupidity or just doing there job.

Mon Jun15, 2009, 9:10 PM

Sorry Dennis I disagree that we should leave the Japanese alone on this one. While they have a right to their culture, I see no "right" to whaling in the Southern Ocean. Apparently they feel its fine to eat dolphin and other marine mammals and I disagree with that practice. What the Sea Shepard guys need is a bigger, faster more powerful ship. Like one of those military things where you can launch small attack craft from the rear with one of those specialized sterns which opens up to the water. I watched them get stuck in ice while the whaling fleet was able to get away. With the right equipment these guys could stop the whaling fleet in one sortie. Best of luck to the Sea Shepard!

Capt.Watson left Greenpeace due to politics in Greenpeace. Greenpeace got scared and was backing away from protecting the sea wildlife. 2. The Sea Shepherd's crew signed on to the crew knowing the dangers that comes with saving the seas' wildlife. Capt. Watson has been commanding vessels longer than you were alive. 3.Surfers support Sea Shepherd because the surfers RESPECTS the seas and the life in it. You going to wait until all the sea wildlife to be extinct before you realize what the Japanese and others like them have done? They don't kill whales for the food they kill the whales for the $$$ they get from them. As for Jason & woodyboy those two are worthless good for nothing crack babies. In response to the claim that Paul Watson will eventually endanger the lives of his crew & someone will end up dead - You're thinking like this is a job at a corporation. These are individual people making individual choices to risk their individual lives to protect the whales. They are not his to endanger. He does not tell them what to do - they volunteer. This is the beauty of it...each individual takes a stand and makes a real commitment like these folks on the Sea Shepard do. That's very different from simply having a job at a company, even an environmental one (do those exist?-soon) whereby the company is responsible for anything that happens, not the individual. That's just like our current paradigm. We're never responsible ourselves..."I just work here". I just throw the "garbage" over there, and wow, it disappears! The people with Paul Watson are not worker bees or slaves. They ARE taking responsibility for their own actions. Blame them for being caring enough to ac

joe coral: Sea Shepherd is a non-profit agency that is required to account for all expenditures so people CAN see where every cent is going. Steve Wimer: Greenpeace, Peta, IWF, etc. are all pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars and doing nothing to help the whales or dolphins except hand out flyers and show up with bullhorns asking these environmental criminals to please stop and, of course, then canvass for even MORE contributions...they have more paid staff members than volunteers. IT seems like a waste of place to send any more well-intentioned funds. AND... anyone with a negative opinion: the crew are definitely often inexperienced and Paul Watson is a bit unorthodox, but these are simply people committed and passionate who recognize a lack of ample time and money to "train" for these missions. They're willing to accept the consequences in the hope of creating some change. Maybe someday some people with training will volunteer; until then, these crew members remain the fum

(As I was saying...) until then, these crew members remain the fumbling HEROES!! On a personal note, I'd rather be defended and protected any day by a "ship of fools" with heart and determination than a group of Navy Seals and Coast Guard personnel with absolutely no concern or respect for the "cause". Obviously, I'm giving an example in the extreme but I'm quite sure my point's being made clearly enough. Watson is crazy plain and simple. As much I am rooting for the whales, I find myself cheering when these starry-eyed hippies have a whale killed in front of them. Continue to nearly kill hippies and burn tons of diesel chasing the fleet, it makes me laugh. As to the jerks on this site who want to cram save the whales down everyone's throats-back off! People can choose what is important to them. Maybe they don't care about the whales but the homeless or meth problem is more demanding to them. You should also be compensated for your donations, so be sure to ask for a receipt from quiksilver so you can deduct it on your taxes. If it is a real cause and organization they will be more than happy to do so. I got 3000 bucks for donating my car to kidneycars last year! Money- the only reason to do anything lol

Watson: “You see, the seal is very easy to exploit as an image. We have posters, we have buttons; we have shirts … all of which portray the head of the baby seal with tears coming out of its eyes. Baby seals are always crying because the salt tears keep their eyes from freezing. But they have this image of ... they are baby animals; they are beautiful. And because of that, coupled with the horror of the sealer hitting them over the head with a club, it is an image which just goes right to the heart of animal lovers all over North America.” And you would give your birthday money to this character.

I totally agree with SoCal. I am not a big fan of whaling. I love Quiksilver and Kelly is my hero. But this shows how easily people can fall in emotional appeal tactics Paul Watson has been exploiting. He is in the pirate business. His salary was $91,500 in 2007. Also, check out Barbara Frum - Paul Watson Interview, 1978 CBC on youtube. Sea Shepherd founder revealed how to make people send more money to his organization. And google sea shepherd and Mr. Pritam Singh. Recently, Sea Shepherd rammed their anti-whaling trimaran to a whaler to crash it, abandoned it leaking fuel and contaminating Antarctic ocean. Now sympathy money poured in to his operation. What a business model! Do some background research before you'll send in hard earned cash!

I live and surf Jbay every day, the ocean rewards me wave after wave. I challenge Kelly to answer one question? In 2005, the dolphins guided you to the line up at supers and gave you that wave where you kicked Andy's butt.I was there. What have you done to give back.... have you taken the time to watch "the cove" 2300 dolphins slaughtered yearly in Japan? Why is Quicksilver in Japan?? Why are you profiteering in a country that slaughters dolphins? Is the ASP looking to go back on tour in Japan? How can you allow this?? Shame on you Kelly, give back and renounce what the Japanese are doing!!!
