During this summer’s polar thaw, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala set out for Child’s Glacier in Alaska with one goal in mind: to ride a tsunami generated by calving ice. The mission—which proved successful—earned the pair the freakish honor of becoming the first surfers to ever ride this type of wave. But where does the feat stand on surfing’s oddity meter?
