Breakdown: SurferMag.com Takes a Closer Look at the 2006 SURFER Poll and Video Award Winners
8.) Mick Fanning: How can you not love Mick Fanning? He absolutely rips. He came back from a potentially career-ending injury. He loves to have a good time. And more than anything, heís personable. In the extremely competitive world of professional surfing, ability can only take one so far. More often than not they need a little something extra to separate themselves from the pack, and Mick's certainly got it.
9.)Damien Hobgood: This year Damien and his wife welcomed their first child into the world. Some say that having children changes everything. For Damien it seems the only thing that's changed is heís surfing stronger and faster than ever.
10.)Cory Lopez: Gulf Coast surfers must have voted in force this year. Cory Lopez has been a fixture on the WCT for a long time now, but more than that, he's been a great roll model for all the surfers out there that don't have tremendous wave resources available to them. It just goes to show, a little passion can take you a long way.
Females:
1.) Sofia Mulanovich: People love Sofia - even Kelly Slater does. Overcoming adversity to be the first surfing world champion from South America, she inspires, and thatís a powerful asset to have. It doesnít hurt that her smile and good nature's infectious.
2.) Chelsea Georgeson: Rivalries are a funny thing. Just like Kelly and Andy go head to head at every event, the same could be said about Chelsea and Sofia, except for the fact that theyíre great friends and would probably do anything for each other. Chelsea's a great representative for women's surfing and will undoubtedly rank among the world's best for many a year to come.
3.) Lisa Andersen: It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Lisa Andersen changed women's surfing the way Kelly Slater changed men's surfing. She is responsible for almost single-handedly ushering in the Roxy movement, and even though she's been removed from the scene for several years, she's still got fans around the world.
4.) Rochelle Ballard: Doing more for women's surfing in Hawaii than most of her other contemporaries, Rochelle always seems happy to share a smile and spread the aloha. She hosted her very own girls contest this year, and once her travel schedule slows down a bit it's probably a safe bet that she'll be doing more of the same in the years to come.
