IT'S A SMALL WORLD: Surf Journalism Expedition Dispatch # 4

One of the many things we came here for...

Sprawled on my bed, body exhausted, I hear the engine of our boat quiet down. The anchor chain begins its run, the sharp purring noise I’ve come to recognize as the preceding sound to surf time. Already sunburned, sore and tired from a morning session at “Seven Palms,” I roll slowly out of bed to check the waves. We’ve just anchored at Lances Left.

On my way to the deck, I couldn’t help but remember the classes so far. Sam’s clear-cut explanations of structure and technique along with Matt’s animated inspiration for creativity and imagination, opened our senses to each surf session: observing more, processing more and understanding more. Class has made each session, and thus the trip, more worthwhile. If we weren’t having class in between sessions, we would literally be loafing around for hours as we travel from spot to spot. It fills the down time with excitement and adds extra meaning to the otherwise perfect waves.

The winds were variable, throwing some texture onto the normally glassy ocean skin. The waves looked fun, but not all-time. There were two other boats anchored alongside us. Usually more boats can dampen the spirit and hope of a crowdless session, but one of these boats did not dampen our spirits. Not this time.

Just one week ago, David, Nick, Jordan and I were surfing in Bali. We met some great guys at the place we were staying and soon discovered that they were going to be in the Mentawais the same time we were. We talked, jokingly, about how sick it would be to meet up somehow during these two weeks. And now, today, their boat was anchored a mere fifty yards away.

I never imagined I would be so excited to see another boat in the line up. It surprised me, really, how truly amped I was to see these new friends again. I had known them only for a week, but I couldn’t wait to head out to Lances Left and share some waves with these guys. Australians, Brenton, Simon and Paul, along with Venezuelans, Javier and Daniel, were so shocked to see David and I climb aboard their boat. Wide-eyed and speeches, all they could manage to say was, “No shit!” None of us thought we would actually cross paths again once we left Bali, but here we were at Lances Left.

We all paddled out and had one of those sessions where it was fun not because of how good the waves were, but because of who was out. Sharing waves, telling stories and cracking jokes, it turned out that a lot had happened during that last week. With all the boats patrolling the Mentawai Islands, it seemed a special occasion that we got to experience a session with friends on another boat with no planning whatsoever. And with eleven days left here, who knows who or what we’ll run into next. It’s a small world.

serious question here - what does "accredited" mean here? Are these guys meeting specific course requirements, or is this just a unit thing? What schools take this as a real class? If I'm at Harvard, does it count, or are these all juco kids from OCC? Someone fill me in.

Caution to Sev Smith - Make sure you actually read something the George brothers have written before you take their advice on surf journalism. Friendly suggestion: do this sooner rather than later. Like, before you pay them.

This "educational" trip gets more suspect by the day. The Chips can't believe that you can get college credit these days for tired writing and weak surfing. When these kids can do proper curls and vertical snaps, The Chips might start reading what they have to say. 23 Chips

Man, some bitter comments come through regarding these logs. I think you guys are not happy about your life situation. Get over it, or go out and do it your way, stop degrading others work, as we all have different perceptions and use creativity in different ways. Go surf and have fun. J

I'm glad the George Brothers still have some class. It sounds like to me some of you could use some class

Ouch, I just injured myself with one of my horizontal snaps...It seems as though I curled and squeezed at the same time. Sounds like those blokes on the trip may be able to teach me a thing or two about curling and snapping. Maybe I should just hit my bong and take a nap...wait a minute, I think I am napping---this must be a dream---I really didn't injure myself...s'cuse me while I book my trip on the next Surf Journalism Expedition!!

Well put, Pete & Jenno. I'm just glad that David, Brady, and Sev are out there representing us surfers... while these embittered "critics" are simply faceless nobodys.

To the Surf Journalism Students: Don't take what these donkey haters on here say about you seriously. Consider it a lesson in writing and journalism: when you write publicly people will praise you AND piss on you. When people can comment on here anonymously, the will try and tear you down because they hate their lives and can't stand the fact that there are other people with enough sack to go out there and try and make their dreams come true. Let em hate and keep on doing what you're doing and make the best of your trip and classes.

hey daddy-o!!, #1 article everyday my ass, cause its the only new bullshit to read that is updated everyday, and the people who write these comments are generally more interesting than some over-the top b.s. course students surfing with the goon brothers, and then merely trying to cover up their sojourn with a "good-will" type of mission statement. just stick to surfing, these daily rants aren't worth the paper their are written on, much like the new era of surfer magazine!!!

Billy: If you don't like Surfer, why even bother checking the site? Read something else.

JEFF- the only reason i check this site daily is coz of the forum- where actual people who arent self absorbed industry wanking pro ho's write material that is pure gold and give insightful comments about the world today, if the editors of this magazine and/or site would get their heads out of their socal asses and lure these guys into marginal writing careers, then maybe their mag profits would start to gain a little more, and after all, isnt that what surfing is all about?

this whole thing is a scam . it's a glorified surf camp for rich kids . under the pretense of teaching someone to write . give me a break . i hate rip offs and the prostitution of surfing . when i started in 1978 it was a "pure sport" . now its all about how you can make a dollar . i don't rip , i surfed a few contests and placed . i even got rated as a team when i listed myself as the only entrant on a team . who cares ? we have lost touch with why we paddled out in the first place , well i pray not all of us .these kids only have to pick up a copy of the "surfers journal" to get a grasp of "surf journalism" .and no i don't work for them , i'm just a prolific reader (bookworm) . when i paddle out i don't give a shit whom i'm in the water with i'm surfing ' not snaking , just trying my personal best . i've met bradshaw ,abelierra and a few others but i'm not bragging just been there done that . as people those guys are alright and i hope th
