It is the sixth anniversary of the Ventura Film Festival, and this year’s selection boasts a wide spectrum of feature films, shorts, and documentaries by both local and well-known filmmakers. Running from June 29 through July 5, the festival offers over 100 films in the Majestic Ventura Theater, the Elizabeth R. Topping Room, the California State University Channel Islands Art Gallery, and various other locations.

Ventura has spawned several famous surfers throughout the years, and housed the very first professional surf competition. Naturally, surf films are a big part of the community, and therefore have a strong presence in the festival. Playing in the next few days are a variety of both renowned and lesser-known surf flicks, including Riding Giants, The Endless Summer, Blue Green, The Women and the Waves, Water Man, and Walking on Water.

Started by Jordan Older and his father in 2004, the event is now a volunteer-based organization that donates a majority of the profits to environmental issues such as forest and ocean preservation. The event includes after parties and a final goodbye party on the last day.

The festival offers a $25 pass that allows viewers to attend all of the events. For a higher price, one can purchase a VIP ticket, which includes free gear and opportunities to meet the filmmakers.
