April 24, 2004 -- The long lulls that crushed a few quarter and semi finals heats were quickly forgotten as the best waves of the entire contest rolled through for a final stocked with world class talent. Tim Curran got the crowd into it early with a solid left that earned him an intimidating 9.4. Momentum in the heat continued to build as Rob Machado and Andy Irons answered back and the lead changed hands about a half dozen times. When the spray cleared, Irons had put up a WCT worthy 18.15, the highest heat score of the entire 5-day event (a feat that earned him an extra $1,000 from Smith). "I'm really glad Body Glove is keeping this contest going." Irons said from the podium. "I remember watching it as a grom with Kelly [Slater] winning and watching Rob [Machado] and everyone. I think it's a really good thing. It's a really quality wave and we need more events in America."

The Body Glove Surf Bout is currently a 2 Star WQS event at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif. It's expected to upgrade to a 4 Star in 2005 and 5 Star in 2006.
