April 24, 2004 -- Classic Southern California weather and solid surf made the inaugural SG Lowers Pro an impressive showcase of female talent. Julia Christian was unbeaten throughout all her heats and walked away with $2,000. In her first contest back after deciding to take some time off from the competitive scene, the bright American hope seemed completely on top of her game. "I'm just super stoked to be back here and surfing some good waves in California," Christian said after receiving her trophy and check.
One of the weekend's most impressive sights was 11-year-old Carissa Moore, who became the youngest competitor ever to make a WQS final (at the rate she's going, she may have a WQS victory before she reaches puberty). You could practically hear the self-esteem sucked out of guys in the crowd each time Carissa gouged a vertical turn or pulled off another clean 360. Expect to hear plenty more about this prodigy from Hawaii.
The SG Lowers Pro is a 1 Star WQS event at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif.

Thanks to Carissa Moore, the term "you surf like an 11-year-old girl" is now a compliment.
