Top Five Waves of Day 2:

1. Dane’s near-perfect 9.97 was a thing of beauty, blending power and innovation, this wave was evidence why the boys on tour consider him hands down one of the best surfers in the world.
2. With a 9.33 Jordy finally put on the performance everybody’s been waiting for. Could this be the start of a South African breakout?
3. Parko also tallied a 9.33, which makes him very much look like a contender.
4. Taylor Knox may be the oldest guy on tour, but he hardly looks the part. An obvious fan of Lowers, his power game’s been spot on thus far.
5. Heitor Alves, the hardly heard from Brazilian, took out Freddy Patacchia, and in the process showed Adriano’s not the only South American to watch out for.

Most Defining Moment:
We’ve seen some good things from Dane this year, but after all the hype and hoopla Jordy Smith finally demonstrated why he came into his rookie season touted as a world beater. He absolutely flared in the dying minutes of his heat against Damien Hobgood, and may now be in the rhythm he’s so desperately been looking for.

Upset of the Day:
I guess you’d call Yadin Nicol besting Andy Irons the upset of the day, but in reality it wasn’t much of an upset, Andy was practically out of it before it even began.

Insight That Would Have Helped Your Team If We’d Only Known:
For all of those Neco Padaratz fans, the Brazilian veteran surfed Round 1, but pulled out due to injury in Round 2, giving Chris Ward a free ride through. Don’t know if that really would have changed your Fantasy Surfer team, but now a fresh Wardo faces off against Jordy, which should be interesting.

Wildcard Report:
And the wildcards just keep on coming. As mentioned above, Yadin upset Andy and now faces Mick Fanning. Can he capture a little of last year’s wildcard magic? Oh, and for what it’s worth wildcard Sunny Garcia squares off against Kelly Slater, which should be an absolute cracker of a heat.
