2003 Boost Mobile Pro at Lowers

"Surfing this contest was fun and I'm stoked to get as far as I did," said Irons. "It's good practice for what you have to do on the WCT as it's a lot harder. The waves are better, so you have to surf a lot cleaner. Hopefully I won't be a wildcard, but actually on the 'CT next year."

Slater, who was striving to overtake reigning world champ Andy Irons' lead on the ratings, was unable to get past Knox and remains in runner-up position.

"My head wasn't really in that heat until halfway through," reasoned Slater. "Taylor was really focused and I felt like the momentum was in his favor. I surfed all right on the waves I got, but they weren't very good ones. Then got that nine and it was pretty much over. I gained some points on Andy though, so it's close (laughs)."

Defending Boost Mobile Pro winner Luke Egan (Gold Coast, Aus) lost a tie-breaking countback this morning to Knox in round four - placing equal 9th. The Australian held the lead until his opponent's final ride, where the California was able to lock in a needed 7.5 to advance by the slimmest of margins, on his best single score.

In between the second semifinal and the main decider today, a special 30-minute display was given by 'Surfer's Healing' - a group dedicated to helping children with autism experience something new and enriching.

Together with the US$10,000 donated by Snapple for the Friends of the Jason Bogle Cancer Fund, and the additional US$10,000 Tim Curran (Oxnard, CA, USA) gave from his prizemoney after winning 'The Snapple Best Damn Airshow' on Saturday, Boost Mobile today pledged another US$10,000 to help his fight.
