2008 JEFFREYS BAY PREVIEW: Get Your Fantasy Surfer Teams Ready For Action

Long, long lines ready to be written upon.

The writing is already on the long walls of Supertubes. If someone doesn’t step up, Kelly Slater, who has won three of the first four events in 2008, will win an unprecedented 9th world title. But while the title contenders ponder how to stop the relentless Slater surge, Fantasy Surfer players are rubbing their hands in expectation. With the introduction of Skyboxes into the 2008 Fantasy Surfer stable, there are now more prizes than ever, supplied by the hottest brands in surfing. Even if you missed the first four stops on tour, one good event can net you enough loot to feel like the grand prize winner. Point your cursor to www.FantasySurfer.com to begin trading. Fantasy Surfer - the next best thing to being on the Dream Tour.

For more tips on how to pick your Fantasy Surfer team log onto Fantasy Surfer where South Africa's most experienced WCT campaigner, Travis Logie, picks his Top Eight for his favorite wave.

Five things to consider before picking your team for the Billabong Pro, J-Bay.

Kelly Slater

Has an 89-percent win ratio over the past three years in J-Bay (17 out of 19 heats). Over those three years Kelly has a remarkable average heat score of 16.21. (That includes a miserable combined heat score of 6.17 against Taj Burrow in last year’s final.)

Understanding

Despite its perfection, J-Bay is a very difficult wave to surf well. Top to bottom doesn’t work here. You need to link speed carves and functional floaters between vicious hacks when the wave allows for it. Experience at this stop is always a huge factor.

Jordy Smith

Speaking of experience, as an 18-year-old local wildcard, Jordy placed third in the 2006 event. Jordy is the only person with a higher average combined heat score at J-Bay than Slater (16.6) over the past three years.

Adriano de Souza

Adriano has made the quarter finals both times he has competed at J-Bay, and is currently ranked 4th on the ASP World Tour after the first four events. His confidence and approach to surfing Supertubes should keep the momentum going.

The Goofyfooter's Challenge

Guys like Ace Buchan, Travis Logie, Bobby Martinez, and Damien Hobgood have taken down some big names, but have failed to seal the deal on the business end of the event. Incidentally, the last goofyfooter to make it into the quarterfinals at J-Bay was Occy, way back in 2004. He’s also an event wildcard this year, and could be the cat among the pigeons.

Catch all the action live action on Billabongpro.com or head over to Aspworldtour.com from July 10-22, 2008. As always, SURFER Magazine will be on the ground in J-bay providing you with a view from the inside at one of the tour’s most celebrated events.

Kelly is going to win this whole thing and laugh all the way back to Santa Barbara State with the championship

Kelly has shown over the years that he has not lost the focus and drive, unlike the rest of the 'wannabes'! Even with his 3 year hiatus off the WCT. (Sad for me for I am a big fan of those so called wannabes!) Kelly just seems to be the proverbial '1' when it comes to mindset and following through. What a great ambassador for our beautiful sport, what a champion. All the media hype he deserves it, all the praise and admiration to. I hope Kelly STICKS around until he is 45. Because lets face it what would the world tour be without him? Get your 11!

Kelly's style is way radder than Jordy's. I love Occy, but...........Slaters' snap is second to none at J-Bay. I can't really think of who can blow him away. Parko? I'd say Kelly's poised to take most fools down. I'm not as hyped on jordy's style as I once thought I was.....

Slater is the man for sure, and my favorite to win, but what about a guy who goes by the name of Irons? Andy is the only potential upset I could see.

I agree with Mr Blake! If there's anyone that could take 'perfect rights bay' title away from Slater's hands, that's Andy Irons. Right now it seems that guys have already given up on even 'trying' to win against Kelly. I think that no one is ever more stimulated and confident about winning against KS than Andy. He is the only surfer in the world that has actually done it, and in big style. AI x KS, that is be the J Bay final I wanna see. But with the trophy going back to Florida once again...

I think Kelly is a no-brainer in this one, but, I hate to say it...the Australian's are always a huge threat these days.

Dont be suprised if Jihad Khdor wins this one.....his floater ability is unfathonable over the fast long sections along with his bottom turn to foam climbs are ridiculous!

Don't know who will win, just know from some vidds that Jefferys is really sharky, like totally infested with great whites...the most dangerous of all, I hope everyone has fun and no one gets bit. surfing is life, regardless of competition, I mean we all have our time, when we are well enough fed or rested or experienced and to just have fun and surf to our individual extreme is the greatest challenge.
