2003 Nova Schin Festival

Dean Morrison

Guilherme Herdy (Brz) posted his nation's first heat win in the Nova Schin Festival WCT Brasil, surfing confidently against Californian Taylor Knox and fellow countryman and event wildcard Rodrigo Dornelles. The goofy footer put his strong backhand attack to good use, collecting an 8.4 toward the end.

"Feels so good and I'm really happy," began Herdy. "We travel all over the world and have mobile events, so we knew this was the way to do it here in Brazil. It's the best idea and lets us come here and show everyone how beautiful the beaches are in the south state. In any winds we can have offshore surf, so it's perfect."

Current ratings #3 Taj Burrow (West Australia) continued the trend of top seeds advancing directly into round three, defeating fellow countryman Richie Lovett (Many, NSW) and Brazilian wildcard and two-time national champion Leonardo Neves. The West Australian secured one clean ride for a 7.47 score, and despite admitting he felt a bit nervous during the match, convinced the judges otherwise with some committed maneuvers.

"The waves were pretty fun, but I was just struggling cause the other guys were getting good ones too," reasoned Burrow. "I didn't have a free-surf before my heat and probably should have. I'm just glad it's over and done with."

Australians Toby Martin (Dee Why) and Luke Egan (Gold Coast) won the event's opening heats, both opting to surf separate peaks from their opponents. Egan, in particular, found some great waves and dominated fellow countrymen Mick Campbell (Port Macquarie) and Tom Whitaker (Bronte) with a 9-point ride near the start.

"It's so good that Flavio (Padaratz) has gotten this event and made it mobile," explained Egan, of his fellow competitor and the tournament license holder. "The crowd turns up after driving for hours and are still out of control. That's perfect as it means we can focus on getting the best waves, so congratulations to all the guys organizing the contest as they've done a really good job."

Padaratz's younger brother Neco won the day's final heat over fellow countrymen and Brazilian surfing icon Fabio Gouveia, as well as Danny Wills (Byron Bay, Aus). Neco's charged up approach and never-say-die attitude served him well, and earned him at least the next day off from competition.

Another decision will be made tomorrow morning at 7am in Joaquina, though organizers are gearing up for a possible return to Silveira. Due to the remote location, no live scores or updates are available during competition hours there.
