"We could see the point why the organizers wanted to push and get a few heats done, but that last heat wasn't really surfing," said Egan. "So I went to Andy to see what he reckoned, as my year is more important than those conditions. He agreed, saying he didn't want to go near it. We all just want a fair chance, and then we'll see some high performance surfing in this event."

He will face Peterson Rosa (Brz) and Rip Curl Cup Trials winner Pancho Sullivan (Haw) when round one recommences.
