RIP CURL VENUS FESTIVAL WCT
Monday, June 6, 2005 (Hossegor, France): Perfect A-frame waves peeled through the contested peak of ‘La Nord’ during the trials yesterday, and with similar conditions forecasted for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7th, contest officials have opted to get things underway in Hossegor this morning.
Round one of the Rip Curl Venus Festival WCT will commenced at 8:45am local time and, conditions permitting, will run through round two today. This way, if the forecast holds, the final heats of the event will run in optimal surf tomorrow.
Conditions at Hossegor are three foot (1m), offshore and sunny this morning. Megan Abubo (HAW), Keala Kennelly (HAW) and Claire Bevilacqua (AUS) will surf the first heat of the day.
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), the winner of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast earlier this year, won her third WCT wildcard of the season yesterday and will once again meet Sofia Mulanovich (PER) in heat three.
Gilmore has defeated Mulanovich several times this year and is eager to do it again.
“Sof has been unstoppable for the past couple events and so hopefully that’s a sign that someone’s got to get out there and stop her and maybe that’ll be me,” Gilmore said. “But she’s on her game, she’s absolutely ripping, so I’ve got a lot of work to do, but you never know.”
All of round one will run today, with a call on round two being made once conditions are assessed later in the day.
