"I was so pissed," laughs Skudin. "I felt like the biggest kook. I felt like a fool. I trained, I came over from the East Coast, and I didn't even get a wave."

But what may have broken the spirit of most groms only heightened Skudin's determination.

"William swam up to the boat, and said, 'Let's go get another board'," recalls Skudin Sr. "There was never any doubt. I could tell he was pissed. But it was getting dark. As a father, I was kinda hoping he was gonna call it quits. It was scary out there."

But on the next good day-and riding a new board-Skudin fulfilled his dream.

"I got about 10 waves, three or four really good ones," says Will. "My dad was beaming, and I haven't stopped smiling. It was the sickest experience of my life."

With two Maverick's sessions under his belt (okay, one-and-a-half), it seems there's no stopping young Mr. Skudin. "I want to tow, like Laird and those guys," he claims. "I've set a goal to finish high school early, and then I'm moving to Northern California."

Like we said, dreaming big.
