KELLY SLATER AT 36: The Greatest Surfer Of All Time Insists That Right Now Is What's Next

by Brad Melekian
Senior Writer

CHAPTER 1: Meet Kelly Slater.

"We all live an illusion of who we are. Probably lots and lots of illusions of who we actually are. And it's hard to know the truth of who you are."

First of all, I have no idea how Kelly Slater sleeps.

If I was forced to hazard an answer, I'd say "well", because he answered yes to two critical questions that I asked him: 1) Have you made enough money that you never have to work again? and 2) Is it true that you're staying in a house with your girlfriend and her seven female college roommates?

Yes to both, he told me, and that sounds like a nice eight hours and a couple of solid REM cycles to me.

Second of all, and truth be told, I don't much care how Kelly Slater sleeps. Or where, for that matter.

I'm much more interested in what Kelly Slater thinks, and if what he says he thinks is true.

Like when he perpetually tells people that he doesn’t know if he’ll continue to compete on the World Tour. Or when he tells his competitors that he loves them.

Is it true? Or is it simply what a guy who lives his life under constant scrutiny says to muddy the waters and protect himself in the process?

Those questions I don't know the answer to. What I do know is that Kelly Slater is charming, charismatic, intelligent and eminently believable, which makes him refreshingly different from many of the mouthbreathing, entitlement-minded pro surfers for whom he paved the way. It also makes him a dutifully skeptical journalist's worst nightmare. Aside from the times when he's being downright transparent in trying to plant something into a story, he is hard to read. Like when he told me about the chicken heart that scientists kept alive in a Petri dish for seven years because, you know, "What you put into something, you get out of it." That's the type of line that might put a syrupy sportswriter's pen to bubbling, but makes most people cautious.

This, of course, is because he knows the game. He's been interviewed thousands of times by now, and as a writer friend of mine who's one of the dozens of writers to have profiled Kelly once told me, "He always gives you the goods." So you can't blame Kelly Slater for sounding as refined as he does when he speaks to you. Because he just may be.

But what, exactly, does that leave you with?

"When you do something, you've got to hope that it can keep leading somewhere else." That sense of progress bleeds into many areas of Slater's life, including the golf course.

The greatest surfer ever is 36, and that's about all we know for sure. As a sportsman, he's at the top of his game, dominating the professional surfing tour at will ("I know I can go out and win a heat when I want to," he says in a way that somehow succeeds at not sounding arrogant). As a celebrity, he's found ways not just to cope with his fame, but to make it work for him. And as a person, he may just be hitting his stride.

Of course, in the end, it probably doesn't matter whether any of us choose to believe him. Because, at 36, Kelly Slater is finding new ways to make the system work for him.

CHAPTER 2: The greatest surfer of all time.

"I always had this theory since I was a young kid that if I made every aspect of what I do better than I know how to do it, than I'm going to win."

Kelly Slater has always won. The statistics and the numbers and the individual details of that competitive surfing dominance are both too numerous and too well-reported to bear repeating here. The fact that he's trying to decide if he wants to win ten world titles or not should speak for itself. This was something that has been on his mind for the last year and a half.

"If I were to win the ninth world title," he says, "then I don’t know what kind of excuse I'd have to come up with to not go for ten. And that gets me totally obligated for the next year or two years of my life."

But what's not so obvious is the degree to which the depth of Kelly Slater's professional dominance is completely unprecedented. In Kelly Slater's rookie year on tour, 1991, the oldest surfer on tour was Tom Carroll, who that year had turned 30.

On the day that Kelly and I sat down to talk, he was 36 years old and fresh returned from seamlessly dusting the competition at his second consecutive ASP event on a tour to which he has refused to commit.

"Ten years ago, there’s no way that anybody would have said that somebody who was 36 years old was going to even be on the world tour," he admits, allowing me to fill in for myself that he's not only on the tour, but ruling it. In sweeping the Australian leg of this year's ASP tour, he succeeded in trouncing his fourth generation of competitive surfers.

This is not happenstance, he insists.

"I think that if you were to do some kind of biological body test, I would easily be as young as the guys that are a generation behind me that are just in their late twenties, about to turn 30," he says.

I'm curious as to why Kelly is constantly referred to as intelligent. Being one of the smarter surfers on tour is like being the tallest dwarf on the basketball team...BFD.

Kelly is not the greatest surfer of all time. Kelly is the greatest COMPETITIVE surfer of all time. Sure he has done a lot of other stuff for surfing, but so has many other surfers too. Right now the top ten asp guys are just as good as Kelly. Kelly schools them because he knows how to surf a heat better. There are so many other branches of surfing right now, to label one surfer the greatest, who is limited to just one part of the whole picture is, in my opinion, just not right.

Squid - look who they compare him against - Andy Irons.. C'Mon, just listen to AI speak and listen to what he says. I always heard the HI school system was $hit but I had NO idea until I heard AI talk. Thank God that AI can surf because otherwise the dude would be homeless and living off the Gov't dime.

Are we talking about things that I might have done above and beyond Kelly? For starters, I not only had kids, but I married their mom before they were conceived and stuck around to raise them unlike our friend Kelly. My carbon footprint is guaranteed to be smaller than his too - I don't fly nearly as much and I certainly don't go through boards and wetsuits like he does. Should I go on?

Squid, he made a mistake and he still takes care of her like it's his own daughter. I've got two kids and a wife and I don't travel as much but believe me..that doesn't make me any cooler than him..But cooler than you? Of course kook...

Why all the hate? You guys are just jealous because Slater surfs almost as good as The Chips and hooks up with super models. The Chips is happy that old, goofy looking bald guys can pull that off. You guys should be applauding instead of hating on him. 23 Chips

"like it's his own daugher"? She (not "it") IS his daughter, and no, by his own admission, he hasn't done much to raise her. Ask her how cool that is. Why are you so willing to blow Kelly just because he surfs well?

No chance of that squidbreath..I'm just saying the guy made a mistake and got a girl pregnant from all accounts from his family and friends (i know his stepdad and a few of his close friends) he has tried to go and see her and be around and I'm sure he pays child support. I don't think that makes any one person worse than another if they make a mistake and he at least tries to be there when he can. I seriously doubt that you would move to south florida and drop a career like that to be there 100% of the time. Get a grip squidbreath...

The realty is that we don't need to move out of the line up to talk about his skills we need to face and accept and talk about him as a surfer of all time in between our global surf community...already the way itis ...by far surfers will have to become phenome to over pass all his conquer as a surfer...on performance, age, etc..you named. I think that last year championship was a gift gave by Kelly to Mick and most of the surfer community just to prove he is not selfish, but this year started in way he can not change any thing except accept he will have to take his 9th title this y & will end up be forced to over come his existing realty...but for sure no other surfer has(sorry to say that)ad ever will. We all want to see new guys, but how can we if?...he is to far ahead of them. What we need to do is enjoy and live this experience along with him as a surfer...that for sure no other non-existing or existing generation will live. So I think are also very lucky to be here and seen all this! Don't sl

Slaters carbon footprint in being balanced out by what he gives back to the environment. YES he goes through more suits boards and flights then the average person, but he has also set up a fund to contribute back to balance out his carbon footprint. We all make mistakes in life, it happens, learning and growing from that is important. He is the greatest competitive surfer, and it remains to be seen what other kind of surfer he could be. He just could end up one of the greatest over all surfers of all time!! I say GO SLATES, keep surfing keep giving back to the earth and ignore the haters

You guys really need to chill out-what's with the Slater Hater crap-what do you know of him? Read an article and think you know him? It's a construct-the real person is only known to Kelly. There is no doubt that he is the greatest SURFER of all time-competitive or not-he can do it all-and do it all with a level of skill beyond anyone else. And, like the writer states in the article-he's a remarkable human being-because of what he has accomplished and that he has not lost himself in his accomplishment. Lighten up-and recognise Slater for what he is-a bloody good surfer!

Dave, Kellys 36 and still charging. The guys never let his guard down and has always been an excellent embassador for surfing on the whole because of his cleancut, drug free approach to life. The amount of turns, barrrels, airs, heats and beatings hes gone through must top anyone on the planets and to be honest, his style is what most would have based their surfing on. Hes called freak for a reason and even you must have seen a move or two that blew your mind and went COME ON! That was ridiculous! Competitve or not, hes the man to beat and whenever hes in a heat or even in a movie, I bet it makes it that much more important and interesting even for you. The guys an Icon, and itll be a sad day on the ASP when he finally drops out and the rest of the boys are left thinking, could I have beat him? Because thats what it would take to be the BEST. KS, 10 titles. Ill be rooting all the way

Ok, everyone's comments on Kelly have either been worship him, or take his pretty picture and rip it. I'd like to go the middle path and not judge him, nor present this false image of his that I have because it is most likely not representative of who he really is. We can only let Kelly be, and see what he does next.. probably to our astonishment. As a surfer, I'm entranced by Kelly's beat, his skills and interests. Something that the community should focus on, rather than assuming we know him because he's on almost every magazine, movie and poster there is, and with good reason. The best ever? maybe.. *I want to see the tour in Puerto Rico.. with Kelly still in it! So make it quick before he flies away.

Squid, don't comment on Slater it just makes you appear jealous and petty. Congrats on marrying the mother of your children that is huge! I am sure you love you children but you made no mention of that? Why try to make yourself sound better than Slater because he made a mistake? Remember when you point a finger at someone there are 3 more pointing back at guess who...you. Slater hasn't cured cancer, aids, ended poverty or starvation but he has done more for the sport and is doing more for the global community than any other surfer before him. He could use his celebrity for simply his own selfish purposes and needs but doesn't. He is simply a guy trying to do the best he can one day at a time. Do you really think he intentionally meant to have a child out of wedlock? Slater doesn't deserve any more respect than a homeless bum on the street. We are all human and equal in God's eyes.

The article makes Kelly seem like he walks on water. He's a great surfer, but come on. Why can't we have just one interviewer that doesn't blow smoke up his @ss? Comparing Slater to other surfers is a joke in the larger scheme of things. Best surfer ever - yes. All around great guy - maybe. Intelligent world-saver when compared to people outside the top 44 - no chance.
Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 1:25 PM — By Al
Thanks for an interesting article that revealed a little more of the human behind this phenomenon. Funny, in relation to all these comments, how some of his 'philosophy on life' seems to answer it in advance: "It’s much easier to see the world and other people and what those people are doing and make opinions of them, but those opinions that you make of them are actually how you feel about yourself, and until you are able to experience that and look back at your own words, at your own self, that’s the only time that you really start to get an understanding of what you’re doing to other people yourself."
Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 2:00 PM — By stu
exactly my point... that quote is gibberish yet somehow because it comes from Kelly, it is supposed to have some great meaning? Read it slowly - it means nothing, and it's certainly neither deep nor profound.
Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 2:52 PM — By al
and now your opinion exactly proved his point - and if you think it is gibberish you might want to re-read it slowly yourself... this guy is exactly the legend that he is because of his approach to things, and therefore this IS an interesting article.
Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 3:23 PM — By stu
huh? what is his point? if anyone else spewed that nonsense out you'd laugh at him. If my opinion of Slater is that he's the best surfer in the world, does that mean I think I'm the best surfer in the world? It's just ramblings of a guy who has been asked to discuss himself a few too many times without ever really being challenged.

Posted Wed Aug20, 2008, 10:35 PM — By Ken
Stu-I thought I might attempt to explain Kelly's jibberish for you. It's easy to form opinions of other people. For the most part, those opinions could be influenced by how you feel about yourself. (you could be jeoulous, biased, angry or simply unhappywith life). If you understand this, then it helps understand how other people may form opinions of you. That's my take anyway

The only reason I watch ASP contests is to watch Kelly dominate. would be quite borring without him. It's like waching King of the Mountain. Everyone trying to knock him down...They keep comin and he keeps kicken ass. Like the guy said before, history is being made, lets enjoy it now and talk about it later.

I find competitive surfing to be a part of the marketing appeal of surfing, the engine which gets shirts, shades, and shoes sold. Real stuff like wetsuits, boards, wax, and leashes boil down to the taste of the user. As for Kelly Slater, his intellect has never been a question. He applies himself in a heat. His domestic issues should never enter into that equation. He is not counseling people on their personal lives. Yes, people are interested in his personal life. Chalk that up to celebrity. To his credit, he uses that celebrity to promote good charities. I think that he's a pretty good guy, an opinion shared by my sister.

Squid. So Kelly doesn't live with his kids mother. I don't know the level of support he gives her and I'm assuming you don't either. So don't go getting all high and mighty with your marriage and crap. Also give us a break on his carbon footprint. I don't know anyone who wouldn't give his right arm for Kelly's job.

It´s amazing how easily people come out of the woods to critize Slater on his personal life, his parenthood, carbon footprint and whatever. The guy has brought great things to surfing, he is a motivation for many who have seen him win title after title, and come back for yet another. Who are we to say anything about his relationship with his daughter? we don´t know any details on that, and we actually don´t have the right to know them in the first place. Just let him do his life, appreciate what he does best and enjoy his surfing, ´cause that´s what he is...a surfer, and the best one out there.

Andy don't have a carbon footprint - Andy have a Boron footprint (its better by one less ion). Andy rip over Kelly. Andy crush his interview along with picture. Kelly date ugly girls, Andy date hot underage gymnastics chicks. Andy is Andy Irons. Get out of Andy's way kooks. Squid is cool - he say Kelly like John Edwards. Andy love George Bush. I think this article says more about the interviewer than it does about Kelly...what a giddy little fanboy!!! There's probably only ever been a handful of interviews that are actually accurate on who Kelly really is. Most of the time it's just the interviewer going OMG I can't believe I just interviewed Jimmy Slade!!!

If Kelly didn't exist we'd have 9 other sucky world champions. Sunny & Occy can thank Kelly for not being there. Mick and AI earned it but AIs done and Mick got lucky because it was the smallest year yet. Currens the man but Slater's the best. Who was that idiot that says the top 10 are as good as Slater? They are as good in "some" conditions but not "all." Fanning - good at Points. Bruce - good at heavinf backside lefts - Bobby & CJ - Peeling lefts - Parko - 85% as good as Slater - Taj - small wave guy - Bede - 90% - AI - on the downswing (done)- De Souza - off the tour next year (just got lucky)

Well I have had the pleasure to hang out with Kelly Slater in Bali, and without a shadow of doubt the guy is a genuine top guy. Relaxed,at ease, enjoying the moment, and intellectual. Swedish dudes trying to pick a fight with him just cuz he is Kelly Slater and they are jealous, and he looks to us and says boys can we go to the next place, dont want any trouble. Now this is in BALI, times that the world over and get a glimpse of the stuff he has to put up with. Now im not saying im bestfriends with Kelly, but the time we did hang out he was a top bloke. Anyone who wants to rag on Kelly has obviously not met him. How can someone say this interview is shite and there are only a few that portray the real Kelly, how would that person even know what the real Kelly is? As for him being intellectual, listen to a young aussie professional surfer, or hawaian surfer, and listen to Kelly speak, case closed! The guy is a legend, the guy rips, the guy has composed himself in a manner that very few top athletes ever will.

Geez you guys need to get a life and stop ragging on a guy just because he is a public figure and extremely successful. It has been a pleasure for me to watch Kelly surf and progress through his career ever since the "In black & White" days right up to his battles with A.I in the Pipe finals. I met him twice and found him to be a very honest and accomodating guy. People need to wake up and work out where all the hostility is coming from it's certainly not what surfing is about???? And what's with the comments on the guys parenting???

What is the reason for all negative feedback against Kelly. Do any of you know him. Have you talked to him? You have most likely not even seen him in person. So how can you judge a man you don’t even know? You cannot! Kelly is an icon for the sport and will go down in history as a legend. The greatest SURFER ever. I surfed against him when we were 16 (the only time) in the Florida High school Championships in New Smyrna Beach Florida. He was so far ahead of us with his surfing then just as he is now at 36. He took a dying professional sport in the 90’s (I know I remember) and made it what it is today. Yes there were other great surfer’s but none of them kicked three generations of asses like he did. The biggest joke is he comes from Florida were everybody would always say there were no waves or good surfer’s. Well the Greatest of all time comes from here so he worked for the talent that he has. That’s why he is better because he had to surf harder (in smaller waves, blown out most the time)
Posted Fri Aug22, 2008, 1:30 PM — By Part two Dylan - Daytona Beach Florida
Kelly stayed focused on his dreams. He made the impossible possible! He has accomplished just as much if not more than most men could expect to in a life time. I turned Pro for 4 years but gave it up, got married and had two wonderful kids that now surf with me all the time. I don’t consider myself more of a man or more responsible then Kelly. The fact is everybody’s path and purpose in life is very different. You make a choice, focus on it and follow through with it. Believe me as a father that has a daughter you could not say in a life time that he does not care or love his daughter. A father’s love for his daughter is beyond explanation. So your opinions are that he is not the Greatest Surfer of all time but that fine you’re all entitled to your own opinion. My opinion is different and I’ll end on this note for you to think about. In 20 or 30 years from now Who’s name will be remembered as a Legend of the sport and the greatest Surfer of all time, not Mick, AI, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll or

No, you can bet your ass it will be KELLY SLATER and let me tell you it was his passion for surfing to stick it out through thick or thin that made it so no one can or will ever be able to take that title away from him!!!! Most of you are jealous of Kelly because you wish you knew yourselves the way he knows himself. Not because he's the best surfer in the world, or that he's all famous and stuff. He made some mistakes in his life and you're so jealous that you even criticize his mistakes because deep down inside you wish they were your mistakes. That's low! Can't you see he's the man you all want to be? You're just ashamed of admitting it. I wish that there was another not famous Kelly Slater so that I could reach him, talk to him, get to know him as a person and learn a few things about true things in life. He's really inspiring, you should think of him while you're surfing, maybe you would stop being aholes! Congratulations on the interview, it's really well thought.

Some of these comments are amazing. This squid guy is the biggest idiot on the planet. Judge yourself before you judge others. Kelly Slater is simply the greatest surfer and ambassador the sport ever had. I hope he wins the 2008 tour and throws the towel in after that. I have no doubt he could take a tenth but I would hate to give some a-holes an opportunity to state that he couldn't do it. Kelly, good on you and enjoy the fantastic life you have.

Kelly is no doubt the King of competitive surfing, and the standard by which all other surfers are measured... But he is more than that. He is also the King of what a surfer should be. He is smart, inquisitive, has a crazy good understanding of the ocean, and of surfing technique. I favor Andy Irons style and radical approach, but that is a personal preference. When it comes to the complete package, Slater is obviously the One. Regarding his personal life, he took the responsibility of his daughter, and did his best to handle a tough situation. Mainly what we should all think about is his example of avoiding alcohol and drug abuse scene in a sports arena famous for abuse. If you don't think that has a allot to do with his overall mental and physical state of being, you are missing the point. He will win 10 titles because he is in control of his life, and youthfulness. The hard drinking Aussies slow down early, and look like old men by the time they hit 40...

Respectfully, leave SL9ER alone. He is the best progressive surfer in the world. I remember when I heasd he was going to be better than Curren, my thought was no way possible. Now look, he has raised the bar as far as Professional Surfing goes. Dane and Jordy got on the ASP tour(WCT), and there was a lot of talk that they were better than SL9ER, and once again SL9ER took the wind out of all reporters sail, that attention is right back on SL9ER. As far as footprint, look how he has brought soooo much happiness and money to poverty stricken countries. Look how his popularity has made the world smaller. Go Sl9ER!! For those of you commentiong on his personnel life, leave it be. We are talking about surfing here, we are not on a Parenting BLOG (even though it is important:)

Slater should be hyped up and praised for all the Hot Chicks he's plowed, not his Surfing. He's a pretty good surfer, but his list of sexual partners is UNREAL !! Good on ya , mate !! Keep slaying the women bro!! Is there an ASP award for the most Hotties Serviced? AUUU-Ryte.

my position still holds - this wasn't an interview, it was an ego stroke, probably complete with a happy ending courtesy of Melekian.

C'mon people, This is an article in a magazine...pure entertainment. Why waste your time judging the guy? His day will come one day when he will be judged by the almighty himself. And that is the only judgement that matters. Kelly is just a human being (like the rest of us) who is trying to live his life the best way he knows how with what he has. He is trying his best and we should all strive to do the same. Would he be under the same microscope if he wasn't famous? Just remember this magazine is pure entertainment...

I like kelly- and he is a great surfer. but I have never really seen the point of surfing contests. and if you watch them, everyone is doing exactly the same thing. oh yea maybe kelly snaps his cutback better or tail slide is better but basically its the same as the next guy. so they go around the world doing this dance- promoting surfing- and the guys become elitists. they make fun of the 'kooks' who buy the 'surfer'clothes and surfboards and clog up the water. its like religion, once you start making a living from it and money is involved, it ain't that cool. a guy or girl traveling alone thru mexico or tropic lands in old surfing bags and a patched board, going out alone and surfing even tho no one is watching is very cool. a glitter boy in surf contest with cheerleaders is as cool as a happy meal throw up after a vodka bender. just like shawn white and his random life HP commercial. what a faggot.

You have it all wrong. Slater is going with ME! Not the other way around!

I appreciate Kelly's self discipline and accomplishing hard goals. Had he chose another endeavour in life, he'd be just as successful at that. Unfortunately, in this world, resigning people will try to bring down those who've earned their success. Mr. Slater seems quite graceful and decent as a person, so all you mean-spirited types can go stuff it!

Lets cut to the chase. Kelly still wins contests because he has flow, amazing style and completes a variety of critical manovers (very critical if you watch closely)in various surf conditions as the tour permits. The guys on tour know that. So do the judges. As a person?.....who are we to judge? From what I can see, Through the dazzling light of celebrrity (when you consider honesty, integrity and compassion) he is still a world class contentender when compared to.........well...us?
