"I'm standing here talking to jeff Divine, so I'd have to say after seeing
his book, the first thing that comes to mind is his rainbow shot at pipeline." |
Jeff
Kelly, 42, Goat Roper/Sandal Maker

"That photo of Teahupoo where it's just sucking water off the reef below
sea level. Nobody is surfing on it. They're all just looking at it from the channel,
thinking there's no way. I look at that thing and think where is Moses?" For
sure Moses must be in the background parting the sea with his staff on that one." |
Jeff
Divine, 50, Surf Photographer

"Jock Sutherland at pipeline in 1969 by Art Brewer. No, wait, that was by
Ron Stoner. It's my favorite because of who Jock was at the time. He was like
the Kelly Slater of the 60's. He was a very cerebral and eccentric guy. The shot
was a pure barrel at pipe during the early days. For the time it was incredible
because we hadn't seen many photos of pipeline." |
Buzzy Kerbox,
44, Surf Instructor/Dad

"The Greg Noll shot of him standing on the beach with his stripped shorts
and big pipeline looming in the background. I like it because it shows the power
of mother nature." |
Jeremy Black,
27, Fruit Importer

"I like that vintage cover shot with the orange tent and perfect wave breaking
in the background. To me, that's the ultimate vibe. Just camping out somewhere
far away and looking outside your tent in the morning to find perfect waves. |
Kevin Krovshinsky,
34, Nutritionist

"That shot of Cory Lopez at Teahupoo behind the peak and in the barrel on
the sickest wave I've ever seen surfed. that a human being can ride a wave like
that is beyond me." |
Luke Agajanian,
23, Musician

"The first photo I saw of Laird Hamilton riding Jaws. It seems like God
made those kinds of waves for us not to touch. But somehow Laird figured out
how to go out htere and ride 'em. I remember there was a helicopter in the photo
and it looked like Laird was going to get chipped in half by the blades." |
Kathleen McClellan,
20, Model/Actress

"It was a cover from '98 with a wave and guy on a board. I remember the
surfer logo was orange. I think the guy was blond, but his hair was wet so it
looked a little darker. I grew up in Illinois and always bought Surfer Magazine
because I desperately wanted to be a surfer. We used to go to Hawaii every year
and I met the coolest guy with dreadlocks who worked on this boat. I decided
I wanted dreadlocks too and he told me to put Sex Wax in my hair. Like an idiot
I did and my long blond hair dreaded up into these huge knots. My mother was
like "What the hell?" |
Jack Johnson,
26, Musician

"That guy riding a piece of wood. I mean how's he doin' that? He's trimming
along the wave and he's got speed and he's totally holdin' his line and he's
got good style. He looks like a native tribesman just glidin' right along on
an old piece of wood. I've seen Kelly Slater try to surf on a door and that piece
of wood looks harder to surf than the door and that guy looks like he's getting
a better ride than Kelly got on the door. |
Erin Bright
Wilson, 23, Actress

"My dad's been subscribing to Surfer since before I was born and I always
used to like Wilbur Kookmeyer. The pictures of the Reef Girls had an impact on
me too. I was like, 'wow, am I going to have a butt like that someday?' but my
all-time favorite is the Eddie Aikau tribute poster. He was such a soulful person
and a true Hawaiian Big-Wave Pioneer." |
Matt Warshaw,
41, Writer

"The shot of Mark Martinson from around '63 on a red v-bottom surfboard
in Biarritz. It was a tiny beachbreak tube and he was inside a safe, beautiful
little cylinder of a wave. It was just a really stylish shot. I liked the idea
of tube riding without horrible consequences if you fall. All the pipeline stuff
I saw was a turn-on, but I was always kind of aware of hitting the reef. But
that shot was a nice transparent little tube and you could see he was riding
over a sand bottom." |
Gary Busey,
57, Actor

"Out of all the pictures you'll find in Surfer Magazine, there are no pictures
as strong as the picture you have in your mind and you feel in your heart that
comes from actually riding a wave. Seeing a sunset or a double rainbow or the
little raindrops on your surfboard. All that comes into you like a piece of heaven.
Surfing is a personal and spiritual issue about being alone to find yourself.
And it's not a sport for sissy boys."
