"My board pearled and I fell down and the water kept me down for like 10
minutes." |
Todd
Roberts, 37
Surf Shop Co-Owner

"On my first trip to G-Land, it got huge. It was really foggy and I couldn't
see anything, but I could hear the waves pounding. It sounded like jets were
taking off from the reef in front of our hut. As I was paddling for my first
wave, one of the aussies was yelling, No! No! but I thought he was yelling "Go!
Go!" so I took off on this huge mush mountain. But right when I got to my feet,
it hit the reef and jacked up and pitched me. It felt like I was falling off
a two-story building. It pitched me straight out into the flats, then beat me.
It tore my helmet off and pulled my short john down around my knees." |

Schoenfeld, 31

"At Sunset Cliffs I hit the reef, got raked, then tangled up underwater
in what felt likea lobster trap. I realmed down there and yanked on it and it
broke because it was just kelp." |

"I wasn't even trying a trick, I was going home from a session at the beverly
hills courthouse. I ollied off a two step, then over a six and either hit a rock
or got wheel bite and it shot me forward into the handrail on my neck. I just
remember looking at the rail knowing I was going to hit, but not knowing if it
was going to be my face or my teeth. My neck hurt for days."

Taylor Spong,

"Probably when I fell trying to ollie down 10 stairs. I landed face first
and smacked my head really hard. My mouth was bleedin' and my nose was bleedin'
a lot. I got about 15 stitches in my lip and a few stitches on my nose.". |
January Jones,
23
Actor

"One time I was body surfing in Bali and my head hit a rock. I was bleeding
and didn't know where I was. My friend couldn't find me at first then picked
me up out of the water. It was like that episode of 'The Brady Bunch' where Greg
wipes out when he's surfing and Mr. Brady goes in to save him." |
Jake Sutter
6yr old super grom

"I've never wiped out. Except once when my dad first teached me how to skateboard
and I fell off. I fell on my knee and got a little scrape. I haven't fell down
since then." |
Cara Michelle,

"My friend Ana and I went out at Gas Chambers in Hawaii on this two-person
Kayak. The surf came up big while we were out. we thought we saw a break in the
sets and started to paddle in. But then the biggest set of the day came in. We
were teetering on the lip. Then just went straight down. Ana was in back, so
she got catapulted over my head, kicking her feet in the air and screaming. We
washed up on the beach laughing with our bathing suits falling off. Later we
went to lunch at Haleiwa Cafe' and overheard these guys talking about the gnarliest
wipeout they'd ever seen with these two girls on a lame banana kayak." |
Michael Zippi,

Air Brusher

"I was surfing Haggarty's on a 9'0" longboard and didn't make the drop on
a double-overhead set wave. Somehow my leash wrapped around my neck. I just barely
slipped my hand behind my head and got my leash off right before it snapped tight." |
Strider Wasilewski,
28
Pro Surfer

"I came down off a floater at Zuma and snapped my foot in half. I just got
back from Hawaii where I was doing tow-ins, so I think the strap on my foot started
to separate my joints. During my first session back in California, I did that
floater at Zuma and broke my foot right where the straps weakened it. I woke
up in the emergency room and saw them driving these huge metal rods into my foot
and I thought maybe I wasn't supposed to see that and I passed back out. I haven't
been able to surf the same since, but I'm definitely surfing, so that's all that
matters." |
Justin Becora,
32
Waiter

"I was going really fast on my rollerblades and hit a garbage can and flipped
over it. My legs went straight up and my head hit the cement. My head was all
bloody, but I didn't get a concussion. I thought my ear was gone, but it was
just numb and I couldn't feel it." |
Kristian Dunn,
31
Musician

"At Santa Cruz my leash snapped my board into my head. It didn't hurt, probably
because the water was so cold. I went in and realized I probably needed help
because there was blood all over my face and it was dripping all over my wetsuit.
But my friend Matt was still in the water and he had the car key. Some people
drove me to the hospital for stitches. That was in high school and my parents
got pissed at us for not using the buddy system."
