"It's like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without the peanut butter if you don't have the Gephart fins," says Frye, an early Fish devotee. By the early '70s a full cadre of San Diego surfers were making Fishes and improving upon them.
"We were just kids," says Lis, "It was like wood shop. I was lucky enough to have a lot of friends who were good at what they did."
But soon the design spread beyond San Diego. David Nuuhiwa "imported" the Fish to Huntington Beach, where he became one of its most visible proponents. (Although in retaliation, jealous Sunset Cliff locals stole the Fish Nuuhiwa rode in the 1972 world contest at Ocean Beach, thrashed it and then hung the effigy from the O.B. Pier with the epitaph "Good luck, Dave.")
In 1975 Reno Abellira brought his version to Australia for the Coke Contest in Sydney, a decision that is often credited with inspiring the twin-fin era and Mark Richards' later dominance on the fledgling pro tour. In that same year the ever-eccentric Bunker Spreckels took one of Lis' Fish to Jeffrey's Bay and established a high-water mark in high-line performance that is still talked about. Almost 20 years later, part time J-Bay resident Derek Hynd re-examined those lines on his Skip Frye Fish, and extolled the virtues of the design in the surf film "Litmus." His work with Frye on narrowing the tail a bit led to a new underground movement that has been gaining momentum year by year, with more and more shapers-including Christenson, Larry Mabile, Tyler Hatzikian and Rich Pavel-hooking new generations on the qualities of the twin-tailed mini-boards.
"I've really learned a ton about my surfing by riding Fishes," says Dan Malloy, one of a handful of pro surfers who grew up on thrusters but have recently turned to the Fish in an effort to reexamine creative performance surfing. "I'll jump back on my thrusters, and wonder, 'Oh, my god, why am I wiggling so much?' The Fish gives you perspective on where the energy of the wave is. It's about the high line, speed and flow." Which is exactly what its creator had in mind all those years ago. And although Lis continues to make a few boards for a handful of friends, he still marvels at the enduring popularity of his little Fish.
"At first I didn't know how to handle it," he says. "I felt ripped off. But as I've matured, I've taken it as a compliment."
If the four-month waiting list for Skip Frye's rendition of Lis' wonderboard is any indication, the compliments are likely to keep on coming.

I am stoked. I used to work along side of Skip in the glassing department of Gordon and Smith Surfboards From 1971 to 1975. I used to make my own fish boards from start to finish at the factory, in my off time. (thank you Larry for the opportunity) I moved to Nova Scotia to pursue other callings in life and left behind my fish template. To my surprise and honor, Skip informed me, as of late, that he uses my template, from years ago. Thank you, Skip, for allowing me a place in surfing's history.
