These manatees swam through the lineup and Tom freaked out, thinking they were some sort of sea monster. It was cool to think I wasn’t afraid of something that Tom Carroll was afraid of. I felt superhuman. All I wanted was for him to see me surf a wave that day. Every wave I caught I looked around to see if he was watching me.�
