Kelly Slater: “When I was 10 years old, I surfed Sebastian with Tom Carroll on a nice summer swell. These manatees swam through the lineup and Tom freaked out, thinking they were some sort of sea monster. It was cool to think I wasn’t afraid of something that Tom Carroll was afraid of. I felt superhuman. All I wanted was for him to see me surf a wave that day. Every wave I caught I looked around to see if he was watching me.”
