In the shadow of Koko Head crater, and within eye-range of the outer reefs where Warren Bolster enjoyed shooting many of his most memorable water shots, a final service to salute and commemorate the life of famed surf photographer Warren Bolster took place. The gathering of family, friends and dozens of respectful surfers was held at this quiet community-shared lawn under an almost cloudless, classic late summer morning of soft tradewinds. Warren's close friend and surfer, Hauoli Reeves, opened the morning's ceremony with the blowing of a conch shell, then a traditional Hawaiian prayer, followed by smooth island music. Warren's surviving family was then introduced to everyone - he leaves behind two young sons - while a number of friends shared stories and remembrances of their time with Warren through the decades of his life in these islands. With Warren's family aboard a boat heading out for the open ocean channel, Hauoli led as many as would follow across the shallow lagoon flats to the blue water drop off, where all said a final and emotional farewell. Here, at Warren's personal and private “studio, if you will, they scattered Warren's ashes in the trades and across the reefs he had photographed and shared with a handful of others in his life, as one of the true masters of wave and surf photography. |
