Gavin Gillette boldly announced his coming out this year at the Monster Energy Pro when he surfed all the way into the final, besting Shane Dorian, Fred Patacchia and Mikala Jones along the way. He finished forth behind Jamie O'Brien, Rob Machado and madman Mark Matthews, and was also given the Todd Chesser Sportsmanship award for his efforts. An ambitious charger from Kauai, Gillette was raised on a steady diet of Pine Trees and Hanalei Bay. Watching the achievements of Bruce and Andy Irons have made all the Kauai kids hungry, but Gillette is particularly so. “Gillette's shown he's one to watch,� commented Dino Andino during the Monster Energy Pro. “What he's been able accomplish here at Pipeline is definitely going to set him apart.�
