Made “Garut” Widiarta is at the head of a new class of Balinese surfers. Getting out of Indo and making it in the great wide world has been a struggle for his predecessors, but it seems like the money and support network is finally in place to help a surfer like Garut make a bigger international impact. “He’s the best up-and-coming kid over here right now,” says Indo-based photographer Jason Childs. “He’s winning everything he enters, and really blows up in his free-surfing sessions. The world’s definitely going to see more of him.” With an elder like Rizal Tanjung to look up took, and the best surfers in the world nesting in Bali every summer serving as inspiration, valuable tools are at his disposal, and he’s already utilizing them.
