With almost no time on the clock, needing a big score, Alex Smith hung back and watched Pipe heroes Cody Graham and Jason Fredrico scramble for the first waves of a solid eight- to ten-foot set during this year’s Monster Energy Pro at Pipeline. In position for the last wave, Smith took off, hung deep and came flying out to the welcome score of a perfect 10. That’s the first time his ability has been so blatantly demonstrated, and serves as a good barometer for measuring what he’s capable of. The oldest of three surfing brothers, obviously Smith’s got a knack for heavy cylinders, and thanks to the grommets in the family keeping the kid inside stoked, his small-wave antics haven’t been left behind.
