Coming from humble beginnings has fueled a fire in Tyler Newton and made him one of the hungriest kids to come out of Hawaii. After taking the last couple of years to explore the “soul surfing” side of things, Newton put a jersey back on this year, which worked out well as he won the 16 and Under division of the Rip Curl Grom Search, as well as Surfing America’s U.S. Championships held in Oceanside. Like a lot of kids, he shines most when he’s in the air, capable of most of the state-of-the-art maneuvers being pulled these days. He has a very casual, somewhat lanky style, and his Kauaian upbringing assures his comfort in hollower waves.
